I didn't want to tramp on the other Dog Thread.
I'm going to go meet an apricot-colored standard poodle puppy in a couple hours. I want to make sure I can let him get all in my face, and eyes and see if the hypoallergenic thing is true.... Bless his little heart, but I guess I was allergic to Thor
I've heard great things about standards, and my buddy has one for a service dog....I sure hope this works out....

They're real nice dogs, smart too, almost Border Collie smart,fur is super soft.
A lot tougher then they look when they have that silly poodle cut, lol

One of the episodes of Duck Dynasty had uncle Si using a full sized poodle as a retriever. Everyone kidded him about it till the dog actually ran out and picked up the birds and brought them back. Phil just shook his head and said, well it sure does seem to be a good dog but I'm not sure I'd want to be seen with him ridding in my truck with me.

most folks [ not all] can get desensitized to dog allergy with injections........if you wanted to go that route.

Until folks made lap dogs out of them. Poodles were working/hunting/herding dogs. They are designed for water and most love it. Next time you get a chance look at a poodles feet. Made for swimming/running and maneuvering. Seems God had a good plan with the poodle "then along came the people and gummed it up good". Best as delivered by Lee Marvin.

Heck, that works with cats too. I had one that was allergic to a bunch of stuff. The desensitization takes a bit, and there is a maintenance shot monthly after that. But it made a world of improvement in her.

Another good breed that are hypoallergenic are Samoyeds. They are loyal beyond measure and do really well around kids, not so great with water. I had one that was the single most gentle dog I've ever encountered, unless something was messing with her chickens, then she was all business. Good truck buddy too.
I met a couple standards (the large, full size dogs if anyone didnt understand what the standard part meant), I was pretty impressed with them, and their intelligence. I wouldnt find any fault with anyone that chose to have one. I understand they can have real attitude if anyone or thing bothers their people.

10 weeks.....He's awfully stressed out. For now, a velcro pup.....Very mellow, very quiet. Just wants to sleep on top of my feet. He took to the crate right off. Hope he has a quiet night.
I'm taking him in for a good trim, and bath tomorrow morning. I'll post an "after" sometime tomorrow....he's a real mess right now. He's no indoor foo foo pup.

Don't underestimate a standard poodle. They are a German hunting dog, not a French madams lapdog. They can be quite protective of their people, and have been Schutzhund trained. I believe that at one point they were also used as a police dog in Germany. Also, that poofy French hairdo that some owners give their poodles is actually based on a haircut which was originally designed to give the dog better buoyancy and also insulation around vital internal parts during bird retrieves on water. If the cook and I hadn't had Rotties for the past 30 years I would be more than happy to own a standard poodle.

A friend has a standard and there are no rabbit, squirrels etc in the yard anymore. Quite a hunter and very protective at times. His other dog is a border collie and they get the same amount of exercise as they both need it. About 4-6 hours a day of retrieve and running is required to tire them out.

I like him already. I like the eyes. He has that smile and 'is that all ya got' look. And look at those feet!
He will add years to your life, taking you out for exercise will be a full arobic workout. For you. Just getting up when he alerts will benefit you, but be careful. He has a full training program and will be working on you constantly until he gets you where he wants you . . .

Almost to smart, that's all I've owned the only think you have to be careful about sometime's there is inbreeding when they are trying to get very specific colors and you can later have problems. Apricot it not one of the colors, fire engine red, brown are
Anyhow I've had a couple all miniatures the 20+ pounds, last one lived 19 years, this one is 15 and while a bit grumpy he's still healthy of a horse.

My girl pal has two of them. Both black and both rescues. I have a "street rescue pit". He has seen his share of battles, all scarred up but a real gentle and tolerant soul. The female poodle and my pit enjoy each other, always playing grab a--. The male poodle can get very jealous and territorial. To date, my pit has been very tolerant of the male poodle's insecurities. The male poodle has no idea he is one jaw lock from decapitation. He is braver than he is smart. Good dogs. 1886
Should of figured something like that. Good name. Mine was originally bred for show till he got too big. Some fool named him Marco Polo. He was always just Polo to us. My sis named her male standard Loki (it fits). Seems folks like names with meaning for them for the big poodles.

Neighbor bought one after a string of Old English sheep dogs. Spanky figured out how to open the gate with his nose so he could play with my boys and other neighbor kids, then would be laying on the deck "smiling" when his owners came home. She could never figure out why he was too tired to walk when she came home until I told her what he had been doing. He could also jump the fence like a deer.

Oh heck, Polo would just jump over the 6' cinderblock wall to play with kids. Always ended up sitting on the porch when he was done. Never could figure out why he didn't just jump back over. Maybe too tired by then.

Wife got a poodle when we got married, smart dog and was a pretty good rabbit dog. The dog up and ran off when our daughter was born. Guess it didn't like competition. Never saw it again.
Used to be a rabbit, squirrel or anything dog, too old to care anymore.
He would chase them but once they crossed the road he would dead stop, simply won't (still won't) go on the street.
I open the back door and he wanders around and after he visits every tree he comes back.
Potty Training is going better than the Random Chewing lessons....I keep the leash on him, and him close to me at all times that he is not in the crate. He seems to like the crate, and stays quiet all night when I play the classical station softly for him. Sleeping at my feet most of the time, as puppies are wont to do most of the time....

Street thing is just like mine was. Their big, and no one really messes with them. But maybe they've figured out those big metal things are nothing to tangle with.

Another thing I do now is I hang a bell on the door with a string from the door handle, when he needs to go he rings it, how hard he smacks usually is a indication of how bad he needs to go.
It's just otherwise not really clear what he wants when he's staring at you, now typically food or water, or when I'm watching a show I just don't have to see him standing at the door.

Yep took his paw and hit the bell and then put him out. Brought him home on Friday and by Monday he was already starting to get the idea.
With poodles just another point when they are babies, rub their paws (front and back) and their tails, if you don't do this a lot when they are babies your never be able to touch them when they are adults, they just won't like it. They are just goofy that way.

my dog is similar, likes to have front paws massaged, doesn't like me to fiddle with the back ones. I must have neglected to do that.
another thing is get him used to you fiddling with his mouth. hold it open. rub the gums. makes it easier to check the teeth and gums and tongue when he gets older.
also, NO TEETH! with a rap on the nose if he bites. get that one, and STAY. That's the one I didn't stress enough. a trained dog won't follow you if you teach STAY, and won't move until you release him.

He has been held, and touched a lot everyday. He likes it.
He's not a biter (yet) but is doing the loving puppy chew on fingers.
He understands NO pretty good.
He'll chase a toy, but has not really "fetched" yet...
He enjoys a good game of tug o war.....
I have to get a set of bells today....He silently goes to front door, but is not being vocal...my fault, not his...working on it...
I think he's going to be very, very calm and mellow compared to Thor...but, then, Hannibal Lecter was calm and mellow compared to Thor...

My dog will c...p on command or at least try if he can't.
However he's starting to not hear well and he's looking more at me for signs what I want when I make louder noises to get he attention. Unfortunately he's also going blind, his peripheral on the right side is clearly gone and he's starting to walk into things. I've now established his "home base" which is what you have to do with a dog when they start to go blind. It's a place you can set him down in the same direction that he's familiar with so once he is blind if you pick him up and set him down he knows where he is without bouncing off the walls figuring it out.
I think it's time to also stop cutting his curb feelers The long thick hairs on his nose, that's basically what they are good for.
