Meat Elk the easy way and the hard way + deer the old way

Post by crs »

The easy way:
After hunting from blinds from dawn to 9 AM, we began to hunt by spotting and stalking, I took mine at 200 yards with a single double lung shot from my scoped .308. Cow elk estimated by ranch manager and guide at 600 pounds:

The hard way:
After more spotting and a lot more sneaking and stalking, 86er took his with a 100 yard shot from his home made muzzle loader using a 300 grain .430 Hornady bullet with a sabot.
Sorry , no picture, but all cow elk look a lot alike. :)

Fallow deer the old way:
Hunting from a pop up blind over a feeder the next morning, Brandon took a fat fallow doe at 20 yards with a crossbow just after sunrise. Again, no picture, but everyone knows how a fallow does looks.

So, meat for all for the winter. Next maybe, some hunting for sport! :D

Glad to hear that 86er is still hunting, and that his kids are hunting, too. Wish I could have been there. Elk are very fine eating.

Good for you! Like the use of the front loader with bale spikes for hanging the cow. Thanks.

Yes, it was a fun outing.
We found a good ranch with reasonable prices and good lodging not too far from the DFW area and it was good to hunt some new country. This is near Cross Plains, Texas :

As we drove into the property, there was a mix of open country and heavy cover, so I decided to use my scoped .308 rather than my 1895 .405; a wise choice as there were places where game was visible at ranges beyond 500 yards and the elk and axis deer were not coming to the feeders.

Good shootin'

Can you give the contact info on that ranch, I googled but I got places in Tennessee and California, both of which are far from DFW.

Thanks in advance.

Here is a link to their pricing on Craigs List - the outfitter has just recently taken over the hunting rights, so some of the pricing is very good. If you are looking for trophy bull elk, we saw two bulls in the 330-350 class that are impressive!

I am sure glad to see Elk there. That ranch is just north of me a few miles. Maybe some day we will see some Elk running through my neck of the woods. It is not too far fetched. It has happened with "exotics" and they aren't even native to the U.S. Nice going on taking your Cow. That will give you some great meals in the coming year.

Trey,
And since elk are not considered game animals in Texas, they are officially exotics and can be taken without atexas license tag. :)
