I've read (more than once) that the French deliberately kept their trench systems sparse and uncomfortable so the men would not get used to living in them. They wanted to attack constantly and kick the Germans out. The Brits were a bit better off and the Germans as you can see, were there for the long haul.

I used to drink in a pub in Birmingham UK that was done out like a WW1 dug out, it was called "The Better 'ole" loads of WW1 artifacts around the walls, it was an interesting place to enjoy a couple of beers...
