Hooray! Duke marrathon turkey day; worst John Wayne Movie?

Post by 2571 »

John Wayne on TV all day today.

Two weeks ago when Maureen O'Hara died, someone here asked what was the best John Wayne movie.

If there were such a thing, what was his worst flick?

Best = TGI

Worst = Hatari

Gee, there are so many... but I would have to say the absolute, no-doubt-about-it, worst was "The Conqueror", when he played Genghis Khan. Really? REALLY??!!

One of the best: True Grit, Big Jake, MaClintok <sp, Cahill US Marshal

The WORST: The Cowboys, Branagan, the other cop flick too.

Never seen the conqueror, wish I could find a copy.

Two of his best: the first that lifted him from B movies and made him a star: "Stagecoach." And his last: "The Shootist."

Forgot to add my .02 on the best and worst. Never liked Hitari, so it gets my vote for the worst. Best is tough, "She wore a yellow ribbon" and "McClintock" are at the top, and then "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence", maybe not in that order.

Have you ever seen all those "B" Westerns from the 30s? The ones where Yakima Knute were in every one of them? Whew...those were fun, but real stinkers.....

I was trying hard to decide when I read Bill's post. Yep two of his best, but I would add "The Searchers"...

I won't address any prewar movies as the few I have seen were all bad but of those made during and after the war "Flying Tigers" was the worst. I saw it when I was about 11 and with it being about the Flying Tigers, WW2, and P-40s it should have been a kid's dream movie. Boy was I disappointed! I watched it 30+ years later to see if it was as bad as I remember. It wasn't, it was even worse.

Lots of his ,and other actors, early B&W flicks were just plain corny. I still think they are better than a lot of the stuff they put out today. Hollywierd has gone to the dogs. I haven't entered a movie theater in

I don't think I'd be too quick to call of his movies corny. I think it's what you compare them to. Here of late there are a lot of TV shows that are playing on networks dedicated to just that. I think today we're just used to more and faster action in what we watch. If you watch "Emergency" of "CHIPS" or any show from that era they seem to move sooo slooow by today's standards. Those show were top rated hits at the time and today they seem corny.
I know it's just me but my all time favorite movie is "The Quiet Man." As for the worst it would be a toss up between "Brannigan" and "McQ."

Yeah Rusty, The Quiet Man is my favorite too and I agree with Blaine that Singin' Sandy is his worst. Wasn't there one where he whistled all the time?

I don't know which one was the worst, but some of my favorites are Red River, Rio Bravo, Rio Lobo, Eldorodo, The Searchers, Big Jake, the Cowboys, Sands of Iwo Jiema, Hondo, Liberty Valance.

I don't care much for his old B movies, except for one favorite that I just love to watch and that one was "Tall in Saddle"

Of those I've seen, "The Conqueror" is easily the worst.

Don't think I've seen any of the really old B flicks, though.

He was too old and out of shape to be creditable to me in " The Green Berets" .... made me laugh and want to cry ...
His best acting was in "Searchers"

Island in the sky was the best. Either Jet Pilot or The Conqueror the worst. The one with Lana Turner where he played a German Sea Captain and they went down with the ship was pretty good. I liked Hatari. Circus World was bad. Randy Rides Alone was just strange.

Y'all are forgetting so many early B-Movies that didn't cut the mustard by today's standards.
But for movies made after Mr. Wayne was a megastar, his worst was undeniably and unmercifully:
The Conqueror, in which he played a Texas drawling Genghis Khan
