The muzzleloading fowler
Forgive me if I posted here before. This is the club-butt Marshfield fowler Mike Brooks built for me a couple of year ago. That's a Chambers lock and .75 Colerain barrel in a cherry stock. The distinctive architecture was common to the area around Marshfield, Massachusetts, in the first half of the 18th century. The club butt may have been inspired by earlier Dutch weapons as well as the French "boucanier" arms often associated with maritime communities. I had Mike carve a W into the left check of the butt in honor of my Wood ancestors, who arrived in Plimoth from England via Leyden, Holland, in the early 1630s.

Re: The muzzleloading fowler
Ben, the barrel is 46 inches. Period fowlers often had 60-inch barrels and bores sizes above .80 were common.
Haven't bagged a thing with it yet, but hope to change that in 2016.

I shoot a LOT of blackpowder muzzleloaders. I don't have much interest big bore fowlers myself. My personal choice is a small caliber Southern Mountain Longrifle. That said..Mike did a GREAT job creating a really nice historic piece in that one for you.
Last September I competed in a "Woodswalk" competition at the NMLRA National Championship matches in Friendship, Indiana.
A fellow in my group was shooting a 62 caliber Fowler, built for him by Tip Curtis. I don't remember the details of his load, but I got a whole new respect for what a well developed load and a highly motivated skilled individual can do with roundballs loaded in a smoothbore at longer ranges that day.
He was ringing the longer range gongs like Cathedral bells..!!
Good Luck with that one...Once you find the "right" combination, I'm quite sure that Colerain barrel will certainly do it's part, if you do yours.

Very nice. A beautiful firearm and one that can serve most all needs in the woods.

That's a beautiful piece Bill. I've always said that it was the smoothbore that settled this country. From the fowlers to the Brown Bess to the double barrels that went west. I hope you're able to make meat with her soon.
