Very nice Model 99 there. What "series" is it? I have a 99e that I bought new in 1965 but even then that model was not known for its beauty--kind of the ugly stepdaughter I guess. Yours is good looking and in a great caliber--from what I hear. Enjoy it.

Its a EG model made in 53 I think, yes I am sure it spent 99.8% of its time in the closet!!
shot it 15 times today & it did a fine job with the newer box of Rem. 100 gr.
Danny haven't had a chance to use the knife yet, it has a razor edge on it!
thanks guys, I think its a keeper!!

I think I paid $60 for a used 99F in 1965. It was a very accurate rifle with 87 grain bullets but wouldn't stabilize 100 grainers. Lord only know how many whitetail I killed with that thing and none of them knew the 13 grain difference. I remember settling on the Sierra bullet in 87 grain as the most accurate and it always performed well on game.
A very nice specimen. Congratulations!

I think you'll find that your rifle has 1 in 14 twist rifling and will not stabilize a 100 grain bullet. Mine wouldn't. It should be very accurate with 87 grain though. A whitetail will never know the difference.

My1927 vintage 99 will shot 100 gr bullets, BUT they have to be more of short or plain round nose not Pointy spitzers.

For our 14" twist 250/3000's -- Sierra makes a 90 grain hollow-point bullet that is built as a game bullet rather than a varmint bullet. Like pdentrem, my older 99 doesn't like the sleek, pointy 100 grain bullets, but the 87's or this Sierra 90 grain shoot fine.

Earl, got some 90 gr. Sierra & some 75 gr. V max, now to fix up some loads & find a calm day to try them, the factory 100 gr. rem, shot very well at 60 yd. mostly just needed the brass so didn't try them at 100 yd. my bro. found 200 new brass in Wis. for a great price, so that's a good start

Thanks for all the nice words guys!!

My 99 was manufactured in 1941. 250/3000, 1:14 twist barrel.
Reading the comments regarding poor stabilization with "pointy" 100 gn bullets, I went back to my records for my "go-to" hunting load.
I've had great results using the Speer 100 gn JSP over 31gns. IMR 3031 with a CCI 200 primer.
I put a 6x scope on my rifle. From a GOOD rest she will print 5 shots in a 1" group from 100 yds.
I have never tried longer shots however and that might deteriorate if I tried to stretch it out to 200+. Where I hunt however...100 yds. is a LONG shot.
I've killed 2 Whitetails with the 100 gn load. One was at 40 yds, the other 25-30. No long-range experience with it.

My 24" 250 averaged 2690fps with the R-P 100gr PSP factory loads. They shot pretty good up to 200 yards. Are you going to chrono any of your reloads? I am hopefully going to chrono 4 differents loads this March. I have been shooting the HNDY 75gr. HP and 87gr SPP, The 90gr. Gameking and and few cast squirrels loads. Was your d=t'ed for a scope base. Todd

Todd, no its not D&T, so if I can get good results out to 150 yd. with a 100 gr. with the sight that's on it I will be happy, 4198 thanks for the tip on your load, that sounds like a sure winner for you!
Todd what do you shoot for cast bullets? I will try some myself with 85 gr. bullets not sure on powder yet

Brad, those were factory R-P loads, was surprised they were 100fps slower than specs. Have RCBS 85gr, and Lyman 65 and 80gr molds. Am gonna try Red Dot with them and a target velocity of 900-1200fps. If they shoot minute of squirrel like the Lee 113gr FP does in my 30/30 i'll be really happy.

Ok, I have a 54 production that looks like yours. 100 gr. Silvertips chronographed 2800 +/- 25 fps. and went 3x 7/8", 3x 3/4" and 5x 1 1/2". Shot more than 40 of those testing. They seemed quite consistent.

That velocity of 2800 fps was duplicated by 33.0 gr of 4064 with a 100 gr. Sierra. Notes say 5x 1" and 4 of 5 under 1/2". Mine has a 4x Weaver. Looks like I only shot one five shot group out of a box of 20 I loaded there.

Seemed to me I was there with this rifle with what I wanted it to be.

Dang Fred that looks great to me!! I do wish mine was D&T for a scope a bit newer & it would have been ( I think?) have some 100 gr. but was loading 75 & 90 gr. this week end, 75 gr was the best less than a inch at 60 yd. with a poor rest, was in a hurry & windy of course!!
I always read that the 250 wont shoot the 100 gr. 2 0f you here disprove that theory, hope im the 3rd.

The older ones had a 1-14" inch twist and some of those would and others wouldn't. I think you have the faster twist and I expect yours will do fine with the 100s.
