Update on Drifter
It's been a month since the homeless pup showed up at our place. He's made himself right at home, and is doing great. He's put on over 14 pounds and is looking pretty good. I think it's time to make the transition from puppy chow to adult dog food and keep him at a healthy balance. He's very smart, and learns basic commands easily with treats as a motivator. I think he's going to be a great addition to our family.

Re: Update on Drifter
Looking good! Ted do you have access to some birds where you are? Good looking animal like like would help bring home some supper, and love doing it.
Re: Update on Drifter
Actually, yes we can get into birds on my property, and both neighbors to the east and west of me. I have taken him out on a 40 foot leash, but I don't have quite enough faith in his recall obedience yet. He absolutely loves the tall grass, and hunting, but I'm afraid that's how he got in the predicament he was in when he found us. He's going in to get shots and get fixed next week I think, after that I hope to work with him more without the long leash and have trust he'll come when I call him, no matter what he's on the trail of.octagon wrote:Looking good! Ted,
There are two kinds of Karma.....good and well, you know. By taking in a stray dog that someone else abused and you giving it a home and quality care will reap large rewards in your favor. Not many people will do that.
I have always considered animals a step above humans. Thanks for doing a great deed and we wish the best for you and Drifter.------6

Other than being underfed and lost, is there some evidence that someone abused the dog?Sixgun wrote:Ted,

Maybe I missed something where TedH said that the dog cowers or is scarred like he's been beat or fought or something similar.
In any case, it's good that the dog has found a safe haven under the care of a kind soul.
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

Re: Update on Drifter
Nice looking dog Ted. I had a neighbor stop by today checking on a stray that was trying to kill his chickens. The dog followed him over and refuses to leave my place. I would take it in but I have two dogs right now and my male Hondo does not like another male around. I had to keep Hondo on a leash when I let him out today. It looks like we will have to take him to a shelter. I hate to do it but we can't handle another pet right now. He is very friendly, wish I knew someone looking for a dog. I hate it when people drop off unwanted pets and leave them to fend for themselves. We see it a lot out in the country unfortunately. Good luck with Drifter, I like the name you gave him.

Re: Update on Drifter
He probably has had a lot of people shouting and throwing rocks at him to run him off their property.
As skinny as he was he probably had people scared of him.
You sure have turned his fortunes around. Fine looking dog.
My wife's Daddy would take in any stray dog or cat that anyone dumped out. They lived a little over a mile from town on an parish road.

Re: Update on Drifter
For my information please: I saw the original photos of Drifter when they were posted. When I saw this new thread I opened it and did not see the pictures. Did I do something wrong here?? Any help appreciated.
ps--glad the dog is going so well. I'm especially interested as I have a new 5 month old bird dog pup and really like dogs.
