Midway email Winchester has discontinued 32 Special Brass

Post by EdinCT »

I had requested to be notified when it was in stock, I didn't expect Winchester would drop it. Also heard 218 bee,25-20 and 32-20 is no longer going to be made over on Marlin owners. Just seems wrong!!!

Those were all special run calibers anyway. They probably were not big money makers for them. The smaller makers like Star-Line will have a reason to make them now. All of my .32-20 brass is Star-Line now. Most of my handgun brass was made by them also.

Well that just stinks. We will have to be satisfied with Hornady brass but I hate how much more they charge for it.

I got the same notice for .30-40 Krag brass. Fortunately I found plenty of it at Buffalo Arms.

Yep. They already make 32-20, and if enough folks want the others, they can probably see a profit making some; they may not be cheap, but I've never felt Starline charged any unfair prices in the past, so they will not likely gouge anyone.

That does suck. I'll bet PRVI will pick up the 32 Special -- has to be more of them out there than the 303 Savage they have been producing for several years. I have so far avoided making 32 Special cases from 30/30 cases because the two rounds are so close to the same size you don't tell them apart by eyeball. The headstamp is real nice if you shoot both rounds.

And Remington is also still making 32/20 brass occasionally. I don't get wildly upset about Starline 32/20 brass being too danged short when I am loading 32/20 (although it is a nuisance) but when you make a 218 Bee case out of it the "too danged short" really shows up. So I would be biased toward the Remington when it is available.

And speaking of the Bee, that case may be externally a neck-down 32/20 but internally it is made stouter because it is SAAMI speced to be loaded to higher pressures. Not an issue if you shoot cast bullets, but could be good to know about if you have a favorite load and run short of genuine Bee brass and have to make it from 32/20.

Not that I know of. 32-20, 25-20, and 218 Bee are all the same parent case though.

Problem here is I've got two or four thousand MIXED .308, but need to standardize on at least a couple thousand of the same thing.

Trying to get serious about a little Ruger I have & work up a good load for it. :)

It's not just brass that Winchester has dropped. Midway sent a message that bulk 110 gn .38s are removed.

Are you sure discontinued doesn't just mean that production run is over and production won't be resumed till all inventory at the plant and on down the chain is sold off and then there is a sufficient demand to run another batch. I have been given to believe that .32 Special and other low demand brass is only produced in batches separated by a couple or more years. Also sellers sometimes use the term discontinued rather than "out of stock" or "on backorder" specially when they may not be placing an order with their distributor for a number of weeks to come, this meaning that they may have discontinued it themselves. In a case like this they may have decided that there isn't enough profit to keep that product in stock in the future.

Understood that. :) What I tried to say in the first sentence of my post was that Winchester discontinues .32 Special production frequently. I probably should have waited till after my second cup of coffee before posting. :D They run a batch, wait a few years then run off some more. That usually depends on the demand and slack time on their production line. I tried to find some 8 or so years (don't remember for sure) back and couldn't. The best I could do was 12 once fired cases and they weren't cheap. A year or so later it was everywhere. It's likely there'll be another run one of these days, the .32 Special isn't quite dead yet.

Having worked for companies that sold to Midway, I know for a fact that Midway often, for a number of reasons, will list a product as discontinued by manufacturer, when they just decided not to carry it, or they are slow getting it from the manufacturer, have too many backorders, or whatever.

They caused us a lot of problems by causing people to think that certain products that cause a lot of excitement and were very backordered had been discontinued and everyone who had backordered from us wanted refunds as a result.

Its hard to believe that 110 gr 38's and .308 brass would be discontinued. Those two items people buy by the boat load. The other older cartridges don't nobody make guns for anymore I can see.

But if you look at the numbers, the .32 SPC is still heavily used. No one talks about it much, but a ton of ammo is still sold for that caliber.

I'm a little confused, Denis - do you know who cancelled/discontinued ?

Was it just Midway doing the discontinuing, or the manufacturer ?

Word has it that Winchester has stopped supplying ANY formed brass for reloading, and will use all their formed brass for loaded cartridge sales. So the load will shift to companies like Captech and Starline to pick up the slack. Some folks will be forced to form fairly common brass from whatever else they can find.

That wouldn't surprise me at all, seems like Winchester has switched up what they are willing to supply during all these ammo shortages (that we will likely see repeat again in 6 months or so).
