Got my Sharps

Post by barbarossa »

My Shiloh Sharps 1863 sporting rifle came today.Gun is in pristine condition previous owner only shooting it a few times and decided a percussion Sharps was not for him.It came with a tang sight and I plan on replacing the front sight with a MVA Beeches combination front sight. Will be taking it out Deer hunting this fall

Very nice. The percussion Sharps are neat guns. Are you going to load paper cartridges or use the brass reusable ones.

Back when I was a kid I knew a guy who used his in 'muzzleloading' season back when Indiana only had 'shotgun' and muzzleloading seasons, and he didn't own a shotgun - just had his Sharps and a 30-30 and a couple handguns. Looked like a muzzleloader so nobody every questioned him.

That is a nice rifle. I would like one in .45 if I were rich. Hope you get your deer with it.

I use Hann tubes in my percussion sharps. Ends are sealed with cigarette paper. Hann tubes can be had in lengths matching chamber size. Process is open breech, drop in and seat lubed bullet, rolled by filled Hann tube. Close breech, cap cock, aim, fire. Repeat often

Beautiful rifle for sure. Congrats.

I'm glad you're allowed to use it on deer, where you hunt - my state has no CF rifle deer season, only "shotgun" & "muzzleloader" seasons, but our BP season is specifically limited to muzzleloaders/ front-stuffers.

That's a great rifle you got there. I had one in a 30" HB. It was fun to shoot. I use to drop the bullet in and put loose 2FG in the chamber. Put a cap on it and it was stiff but extremely accurate. I even shot mini's in it. I also had a carbine. The rifle would shoot 3 in one hole at 100 yards. A good friend was the original owner and decided to give them back. He needed money for insurance for his wife didn't have it and sold me both of those guns to me 25 years ago. So instead of leaving them in my will I would just give them back.

Great looking Sharps! I've never shot paper cartridges, or much percussion. Seems a much easier route than a muzzleloader!
