ADIOS AMIGOS ! !

Post by Pete44ru »

.

FWIW, Oct 1, 2016 is D-Day: http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/ameri ... le/2599521

The Department of Commerce is set to hand off the final vestiges of American control over the Internet to international authorities in less than two months, officials have confirmed.

The department will finalize the transition effective Oct. 1, Assistant Secretary Lawrence Strickling wrote on Tuesday, barring what he called "any significant impediment."

The move means the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, which is responsible for interpreting numerical addresses on the Web to a readable language, will move from U.S. control to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a multistakeholder body based in Los Angeles that includes countries such as China and Russia.

Critics of the move, most prominently Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, have pointed out the agency could be used by totalitarian governments to shut down the Web around the globe, either in whole or in part.

I have something to say about this but

a: my full range of expression would not even be appropriate among my old military friends

and

b: my comments, were I to utter them may be considered legally actionable and/or warrant a visit from some or 'nother gov't agency

This is beyond stupid.

Oh, by the way, I am more than familiar with the internet, networking and have been involved in the field since the mid-eighties. I have gone from a Commodore 64 with a 300 baud modem to currently administering/troubleshooting/repairing/installing/upgrading a nationwide Cisco voice/data network

It will take awhile, but it will be a disaster.

I shall return to biting my tongue.

wescoger,

do you suppose it might lead to more private networks, provincial, local communities, with IPs that don't run on any of the 'official' routers? they exist, they just need a different addressing scheme.

do you suppose that it could be possible to take it back in the future?

I agree with you, it's terminal stupidity . . ,

Ham radio could fill the niche with their 'packet' and repeater technologies....

you can't legally code or encrypt ham comms. and if I do it, I'm a sitting duck.

BTW, the whole internet thingy grew in part out of those technologies

Bugger. I pitted a TRS-80 100 against an Apple II in Chess about 37 years ago...

The Apple Lost. (Go SARGON Chess!)

The boys at Cheyenne Mountain spiked the 1200bps modem on my NEC2000 powered, no hard drive, Z181 laptop when I was diddling around inside a "secure" phone link (patched into by my wire dogs at Ft. Carson) from the tech-ops area of my Nuke Van....

Still have the unit. Replaced the modem (yaay circuit isolation) and it worked for another 20 years. (batteries/charging circuit are now 100% toast)

I am in the process of getting my Ham license. My technician test is Sept 5 . With all the repeaters out there, and now Echolink, (computer/Radio interface). I will be prepared for what ever.

Are we better off now than before the Inter-net ??????

By the time we need to use AlterNet BBS's, HAM licensing will be moot.

Just learn the tech and acquire the hardware. The end of the .gov will take care of the rest.

Well, if the end is coming, it's kind of a relief for me. No more trying to decide if I want to waste my time on the internet or go fishing. Can I get rid of my cable too?
