Punkin' balls, brass hulls and black powder

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Gang, I have a little Belgian hammer double in 16 gauge from the small Liege shop of Victor Collette. The barrels were cut to 24 1/2 inches for whatever reason, so the tihng is cylinder bored, with 2 9/16 chambers. I just happened to have two boxes of Magtech/CBC 16 gauge brass shells in the shop, so it struck me that this would be a very fun gun to load some round balls for.
It seems 6-pt. Sika has been down this path, so I will scroll down and look, but has anyone else played this game with a shottie?

Ain't that a coincidence! I recently sold a hundred year old Ideal mould for 16 ga. pumkin balls and I cast up a hundred before I sold it. They mike out at .652

No, I never did what you asked for but 6 point sure has. Hope it works out for ya but.......better watch those old barrels. I've seen those old Belgium Damascus barrels "go" at a cowboy match.----6

Six, this double was made after World War I, with steel barrels. No worries, mate. I may have to ask Jeff Tanner to turn me a .650 round ball mold.

Mould ordered from Jeff, cost £41, or $55 shipped at the current favorable exchange rate. Now to file out a rear sight to solder to the rear of the rib, and we got us a dang close range hog gun!

Interesting ! I've not tried a single round ball in any of the gauges "yet" but who knows . All I've done with the 16 was come up with a decent low pressure load I can use in a damascus barreled Parker that was made around 1910 . As far as 16 and slugs go I walked into a couple old 25 round boxes of Foster slugs that I've tried in my AH Fox A grade 16 and a couple drillings . Also tried the present Brenneke slugs in the Fox and the drillings with decent or better results .
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !

I tall ya...coincidences are really on a roll around here. I should open up some kind of a museum.

Lookee what I found hidden away for many years....8 full boxes (10 each) of Stoeger Brenneke slugs for 16 gauge complete with these little plastic things that wrap around the slug. They are marked $5.30 a box but who knows how long ago that was. But......as I'm a nice guy who has too much pelosi laying around, $50 will buy them. $12 for shipping----- :D ------6

O.K. I'm a nice guy but I don't want to split them up. Too much aggravation. Harold from Alaska is the happy guy.-----6

Hmmmm never saw the reloadable Brennekes for sale before . All I had or have were factory loaded added ammo .

ML CVA double barrel 12 ga. I taped screw to hold a sight on rib and played with patched RBs at 25 30 YDS shot very well. never sadly moved out to 50 yds. Barrels shot right together. But stretch that out farther I don't know? Seen to hit hard?? Seem like it put a port hole in side of a deer .

here is that Husqvarna 16 x 20 gauge hammer gun:

Image

back action hammer gun , with very strong lock up

Image

well balanced in the hand, and the barrels at the breech are same diameter

Image

at the muzzle you can see the asymmetry:

Image

of course, one needs to be very careful not to put the 20 ga into the 16 gauge chamber. the sight is adjusted to be dead on with the 16 gauge cylinder bore barrel. the 20 gauge barrel shoots tight pattern with # 6 shot. need to pattern it with some buckshot.

Harold, I have had a number of those Husqvarna Lefever-action hammer doubles. They are fascinating and well-made guns. I'll say this, though, the very early 16 I had with twist barrels got very hot after just a few shots with BP-loaded Magtech shells. One needed a welding glove for the left hand to shoot more that just a few clay pigeons!
