32-20. How many guns can take cast bullets sized to .314"?

Post by Tycer »

I went out and shot a couple more targets for the lever action pistol caliber postal match. I found some bullets that Yancey had cast for me years ago with Blue lube sized .314". I shot one group of 10 of each. (Had one squib primer that took three strikes to fire. A first for me. ) Much tighter groups. I have a .313" Lyman sizing die I can open up that .001", but will I run into any guns that won't chamber them?

We have a Master class shooter with about a dozen national records that sizes his 30-30 to .311. Laser Cast 32-20 are .313, so
.314 shouldn't be a problem.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

I have shot the Lasercast .313 32-20 bullets for years, never a problem.

I usually load a cast bullet the biggest that the chamber will take....or the mould will make. For instance, I size .348 at .351 and most of my 30 caliber guns get fed .311-312.

By sizing the largest you can...within reason here......the bullet is better lined up in the chamber and therefore enters the rifling more concentric.

Cast bullets mind you......with normal loads........the groove will size them up just fine.-----6

I currently shoot two rifles in .32-20 caliber. One is a Winchester Model 92 made in 1929, the other is a new production Cimarron copy of an 1873 Winchester Deluxe. I use a Lyman 311008 115 grain cast lead bullet sized to .314 in both rifles with very good results.

At one time I had a Cimarron Model P Jr. single action revolver in .32-20 that shot the same bullet, so in my experience the .314 diameter is not too large.

The Lyman 311008 sized .314 shoots great in my .327 Federal magnum as well as my .32-20's.
I have yet to try them in the .32-40 or the .32 Special but I bet they would make great small game loads.

I just looked at my stash of unsized 311316 and they're all .313". I'm not sure who's mold I used.
My 311008 is throwing them .314+ and my sizing die will soon be also.

I shoot Beartooth cast 25 caliber sized to .314 in my Browning model 53 32-20,
plus in my pietta pistol. They work excellent.
Have you read all of Paco's articles on the 32-20. If not you will find them quite interesting.

Some of us will be real surprised if that works out in the 32-40, Chuck. I gotta feelin' the same fellow named the "32wcf" as named the "44wcf". And maybe it was his evil twin named the "38wcf".

Wow !! What was I thinking ? The .32-40 takes .323 bullets. at least that is the size I shoot in my Ruger #1 .32-40 that has an 8mm barrel on it.

Yeah I'm shooting .321 jacketed in my .32 Special. Haven't tried cast in it yet.
I HAVE used the .312 and .313 cast bullets for cat sneeze loads in my .30 wcf.

I bet .314 #2 lead in your .32-20 will do fine. If you're leery, just don't shoot them in the weaker revolvers. I've toyed with the idea of a .327 Magnum. I have the P, Jr from Cimarron that has the .32 wcf and 32 H&R mag cylinders.

Vancelw , I have all three barrel length Ruger Single Sevens (.327 Fed. Mag.) they all three just love the Lyman 311008 cast of WW and sized .314". Due to sight radius I shoot the 7 1/2" best,as can be expected. 14 shots into 1 1/2" at 50' is normal from a rest. That is about the best that I can shoot any handgun these days. That is with loads in the 1,000 fps range.

I use a .314 in my 92 Win and a low wall, both have been relined . Same .314 in a 1905 S&W HE and a Cimm mod P. And almost forgot the Marlin 27s.

I try to not shoot bullets over bore size by more than .0005"-.001" So if my bore slugs .3125" I'd shoot a .313" bullet. If it slugs .313" I'd still shoot a .313" bullet. I'd only load a .314" bullet if my bore was over .313"
You really shouldn't try to pick one general size bullet to fit the largest .32-20 bore you have, and expect any accuracy out of the round in smaller bore guns.

I have old .32-40's that are all over the place with bore sizes! Most are around .319", but I have a Ballard that has a .3165" bore, and a Hepburn with a nearly .323" bore. So I tailor my loads and bullets to a particular gun, and mark the boxes as to which gun they were loaded for. Wouldn't want to drop that .323" load into the .3165" bore of the Ballard. The accuracy, and pressures might not give very good results.
