Winchester Model 94 Scope Mount ? (Completed) :-)
What brand scope mount is this?
If so are they still available?
How exactly do they attach?
I would imagine a scout/EER type scope has to be used for this setup.

Re: Winchester Model 94 Scope Mount ?
Well, that gold ring around the tube says Leupold and probably 2.5X. Yes it would be EER or Scout Scope but I don't recognize that mount. Someone who does will be along soon.
I like the concept but it's right where I want my hand for carrying and it makes the rifle more muzzle heavy so the balance point is right through the scope. It may not bother you at all. ]
Have you tried a receiver sight? They really help my old eyes focus on the front sight but I like a flat top blade for the front so there is a definite top to it. Read that as Redfield Sourdough like I have on my '86. The last few days I've been carrying it for our late doe season and even just before dark that 45 degree gold insert just shines. The 26 inch barrel puts that front out far enough to really come into focus through the aperture.

Re: Winchester Model 94 Scope Mount ?
I don't think I'll do it.
My 1943 has no additional holes for any type of add on sight's, nor sling for that matter.
And it's going to stay that way under my stewardship.
I just thought this was an interesting way of adding a low power optic without D&T'ing.

How exactly do they attach ? - It looks like the rear end of the mount is anchored to the rear barrel open sight dovetail with an adaptor. The ring are QD, via operating the ring's lower lever.
I would imagine a scout/EER type scope has to be used for this setup. - Not necessarily. Often, due to the difference between varied human's ergonomics, a LER (long eye relief, like that Leupold ) pistol scope would give a better/fuller sight picture than an IER (Intermediate Eye Relief) "scout" scope.
Leupold usually stamps each scope's objective end ring with the scope model and magnification (M8-2x or M8- 3x, in your case).

Re: Winchester Model 94 Scope Mount ?
I'm not sure, but I believe that is the original Leupold forward mount from the early 1970'. Made to go with one of their early long eye relief scopes. The barrel had to be drilled and tapped for this mount. They are not often encountered today, but I do not know if they are collectible. Always had a soft spot for them. Remember reading about them in the late 1970's, when I first started buying gun magazines. By the time I was old enough to afford one, the mount was out of production.

Leupold Detacho rings and base, not for sale for years. Jeff Cooper talked about the handiness. Sweet ol school mount.

I've gotten a couple more Detacho mount sets since that earlier thread. I have been using the Pearson and it has been fine so far and is a no drill. It was nice to see 1.5 inch groups again too! I really like the Burris scout also.

Re: Winchester Model 94 Scope Mount ?
I knew an older Gent that used the Leupold Detacho setup with good results years ago. I thought it was drilled into a sight blank and the forearm band. That would stop my using it on a unmolested pre 64.

Decided to go this route.EdinCT wrote:I have been using the Pearson and it has been fine so far and is a no drill. It was nice to see 1.5 inch groups again too! I really like the Burris scout also.
Just ordered one.
Ed, what brand rings, low, med. or high are you using?
I'm definitely going with a vintage Leupold M8.
Haven't decided on a 2x, 2.5x or 3x.

Re: Winchester Model 94 Scope Mount ?
Going by my fuzzy memory I seem to recall that Bushnell had what was probably the first "scout scope" concept waaaayyy back when they first introduced their Phantom handgun scope. Long eye relief scope mounted ahead of the receiver. The first Phantom was 1.5X, again IIRC.
Re: Winchester Model 94 Scope Mount ?
CS, I have a medium set of cheap Weaver's on it now but don't like them. When I get some extra jingle in the spring I hope to try some like these. it would be nice to be able to pop the scope off in a down pour and use the Williams peep.

Still researching and deciding on what scout scope to purchase.
You would be well served, if you first figure out what scope would work the best for YOUR ergonomics.
First, use any old scope to determine about where on the rail, that the rearmost end of a scope would be positioned when mounted, then temporarily mark the spot with a small piece of tape - then hold the gun as if you're going to fire it.
Second, while holding the gun in firing position, have another person measure (ruler) the distance between your eye and the mark, notating the 9", 10", whatever.
Once you have that measurement, simply start surfing the various scope's tech specs for each one's eye relief/eye distance spec.
"Normal" riflescopes will usually have anywhere from 3-1/2" to 5" eye relief, depending upon the scope/maker.
"Scout" (IER - intermediate eye relief) scopes will have about 7-1/2"-9" eye relief, also depending upon the scope/maker.
"Handgun" (EER - extended eye relief) scopes have eye relief "windows", depending upon the scope/maker - like 9"to 17", or 11"to 21".
The Gold Standard would be a scope that will give the shooter a clear/ full sight picture, and not a partial sight picture, or "black out".
IME, I've found that variable scopes, and/or scopes having more than 3x, make the scout mount scenario more difficult to use than it needs to be.
FWIW, a good place, with great folks to deal with, for checking scopes is http://www.swfa.com - where I've bought several scopes that carried a deep discount, over the past 10 or so years.
ALWAYS check swfa's weekly "specials", for a really low cost - a few years ago, I was able to buy a (new) $729 Trijicon Accupoint Safari variable scope for $399.

I have a gut feeling a total 'tack-driver' or a total failure.
If you see all this scope paraphernalia for sale in the classified section, it was the latter

I'm really liking the way this little Rifle setup handles.
Absolutely perfect for the type of PA. Deer hunting I do. (Brush hunting, 50 yards is a long shot)
I can see this one making it through the downsizing cut and being my Deer Rifle in my retirement years.
All the above target shots were at 50 yards.
I rarely shoot much past 50 yards anymore.
No real reason to.
Re: Winchester Model 94 Scope Mount ? (Completed) :-)

I'm really liking that little old Leupold M8 2x.
Open sights, I'd of been spraying all over the black of those targets.
There was a time I could shoot plain-jane open sights like nobody's business.
Not so much anymore.

Re: Winchester Model 94 Scope Mount ? (Completed) :-)
Wish Pearson had a setup like that for a 1941 Winchester M70. That one had 2 screw holes at the top front of the receiver and 2 holes at the left side of the rear receiver which doubled as peep sight mount. Mine currently has a Lyman sight that looks about as old as the rifle. Would love to mount a scope on it without having to drill more holes in it!
Re: Winchester Model 94 Scope Mount ?
They are the (now sealed) ports used for filling the scope/tube with an inert gas (usually nitrogen) - after the scope's assembled, the gas is fed into one port until it bleeds out the 2nd port, then both are sealed.

Very pleased all the way around with the outcome of this project.
Maintains the classic levergun looks and handling characteristics with the optical advantage for older eye's. Exactly what I was looking for.

Tell me about a couple of things on your old 194? 94. is it marked 30wcf? is the hammer checkering in a little square? I have one in almost new condition that first dated 1939 then other sites put it as a 1943 so I don't know what it really dates at.

Jerry, pull the forearm and feed tube off, the manufacture date ought to be stamped under the barrel near the receiver. CS...the guy with the 71 still drilled two extra holes on the left side of the receiver. If I was gonna go that far, I'd drill one more and put a side mount on it.
Those Pearson mounts are nice. With a little Italian ingenuity you can make em work for other leverguns also. I used a Leupold matt finished one on my turkey rifle.----6
