Rossi Model 62 SA Octagon Barrel

Post by Old Ironsights »

OK, so I now own this 23" octagon Model 62 SA.

Didn't realize it was the .22LR only version. Slight bummer there since it won't feed the .22 Super Colibri's I wanted to feed it... and it can't be single-fed. Tube only.

Numrich used to have the S/L/LR carrier, but they are out.

But other than that, it looks like I got a fair deal.

I have one, like it very much. Fit and finish are better than I expected they would be, and so far at least it functions flawlessly. Really fun to shoot, if you get it lay in a lot of .22 ammo as you will be going through it. :D

Maybe, just maybe, a Winchester 62 or even a Winchester mod. 1906 carrier might work. They are all pretty much the same action. I have an 1890 and these guns are caliber specific but before I was born, someone (I surmise) fitted a 1906 carrier and it feeds and shoots shorts, longs, and LR. Might be worth looking into and dang, I had the entire guts to a 1906 but sold them to HCable a couple of years ago.----6

My guess is that the internals are the same as Nancy's 62LAR. It has a captured-round type carrier using the nose of the round sitting in the carrier to prevent the next round from leaving the mag. A small piece of pencil eraser will stay in the back of the carrier to make those shorts run flawlessly. We've run many bricks through Nancy's.
Kind regards,
Tycer

i have a .22 mag. version and i single feed shorts, longs, long rifle, w.r.f. , and magnums.....i know you're not supposed to but i do anyway......orient the top of the carrier even with the chamber and drop them right in......
OK. Got that sorted. Have to open the bolt slowly/just right to keep the carrier from locking in the Up position. don't know yet how that will work for ejection, but we'll see.

There is a mod to turn the LR only into a S/L/LR, but it requires a mill and 2 small parts.

Apparently not too hard if you own/know a Mill, but there we are. (Complete 1909 Win carriers are about $125 and Cthulhu knows how much fitting it would take to work...)

The only problem I have in mine is that it won t eject winchester ammo as the rim seems to be not large enough for the extractor. It works great with federal and other ammo but not winchester.

Well, if you do, and can spare them, I'd be much obliged.

Not in a huge hurry, but making this old girl take all sizes would be handy...

OMG. it looks like, for the first time, I've actually come out ahead on a gun buy.

I guess these Octagon barrel Rossi 62SA's are sort of scarce, and that I may have made nearly $200 in (un)appreciated value over what the pawn shop sold it to me for.

Nice to see a $300 gun turn into a $500 gun just by Googling it. 8)

WOO HOO!

Found a Rossi S/L/LR carrier (no stop) and a 1906 OEM Winchester 62 cartridge stop & pin.

Swapped the parts around and it tube feeds Super Colibri's now...

I should probably take it back apart and polish everything... but it all works as is, so that's just going to be for fun and not function.
