After conferring with Henry, the consensus is a weakened locking block spring.
Gun's offline till it goes back for an overhaul, but the wear on the block is minor & not a concern.

Another MIM part that's held up very well.

Dang lucky that didn't blow back, or up....I ignored a filthy early sixties Mountie decades ago. Evidently it didn't close up good, and it scattered some gas, powder, and a little brass out the side.....That one is worse than I let mine get.

It was still locking up just fine at that 22,000-round count, despite all that gunk buildup.. :)

During the talk with my Wisconsin plant contact, we decided the locking bar spring was the cause of the sluggish lockup at the end of the 28,000 rounds, and the handful of extraction failures after that were most likely due to the chamber.

Henry recommends cleaning the chamber now & then, but I deliberately didn't during the entire run.

Decided to remove the locking bar & spring and compare them to the same parts in a low-mileage personal GB, to see if the test gun's spring had shortened, causing the sluggish lockup.

Pulled the bar & found the spring under it had broken into three pieces, I'm astounded that it was even providing any lockup pressure at all.
The bar itself has minimal wear & is no concern at all.

Denis,

Are you still going to ship the rifle back to Henry or just replace the spring yourself?

When I'm done with the remaining photos & the write-up, it'll go back to Henry for a thorough exam.
Nobody's ever done this before & they want to put it under a microscope to see what tolerances may have changed.

I'll coordinate with the plant manager & he'll walk it through himself.
After that's done, I've asked him to overhaul what absolutely needs to be overhauled, but not to replace anything just for mere cosmetics.
Every ding & scrape on it I've worked hard to get there. :D

And then I'll buy it.

That says it all right there.

I hope they give you a good deal on it. Love my Henry and it's good to know 30K will be no problem.

Thanks for doing this and posting up.

Wow, that's something all right. Rim fire ammo can be really dirty. Thanks for the thread & all.

You are entirely welcome.
If it helps prospective buyers get past the "cheap pot metal guns" BS, the wrist damage was worth it. :)

We were looking forward to the Henry 45-70 torture test.....10,000 rounds would be sufficient, Sir.
