Cartridge - your favorite?
I think this came up on the old forum, but figured it would be fun to stoke the fire again, and try out this polling feature!
If you could only have ONE cartridge (perish the thought) - rifle, handgun or both - which one would you pick?
Okay, I didn't figure out the polling feature. No big surpise given my computer illiteracy!

CARTRIDGE??
45-70. It can do it all. Tom.
Only one cartridge? What, are you crazy?
Only one???
Man, that'd make me insane trying to decide...
But, here's a go at it. If the choice were for a long gun, I would choose 30/06, for as Townsend Whelen said, a 30/06 is seldom a bad choice. ( or words to that effect.)
If the choice were for a handgun, then it would be the 357 mag, but dang, that's a hard choice! It and the classic 45 colt and 44 mag all have points in their favor... The 357 is effecient, flexible in being able to use both 38's or 357's, and generally a all-around useful cartridge. But via handloading, the 45 and 44 are both flexible and all-around cartridges too. I guess the economy of the 357 swings it for me in this case.
A cartridge for both handgun/long gun? Well, then I'd settle for a 44 mag, as it woul d best staddle the fence, being able to load mild for plinking loads or full house for a thumper out of a lever gun...
Ask me tomorrow, you'll likely get a different answer...

Yep, I meant only one - period - same cartridge to feed both a handgun and a rifle. Or, if you pick a rifle cartridge, I'm assuming you're either not a handgun enthusiast, or willing to forego the handgun to get the performance of a rifle-only cartridge.
I'm leaning towards the .22 Long Rifle myself, just because it already feeds over a dozen of my firearms, in all shapes, sizes, and actions, and like 20cows said, you can shoot id all day long and not go broke.
Still, it lacks in the hunting and self-defense departments...

YK,
You can edit your original message to edit the poll. I think you can see how it works now. I guess from your last message (posted while I edited) that I didn't get it exactly right. However, you can edit it as you please. If you have problems, ask!

3" chambered 12 ga. shotgun. Most versatile and useful firearm of the bunch. Target loads, field loads, buck shot, slugs. Clay targets, small game, big game, waterfowl, upland birds, turkey. No other firearm can give as much entertainment (trap, skeet, sporting) and put as much food on the table. And being a trap shooter, I go through thousands of shells a year, so the 12 ga. shotshell is by a wide margin my most used cartridge, followed by the 28 ga.

favorite caliber
Hmmm. Not to pick on words, but your poll asks favorite caliber, while your post asks if I had to have only one. For me, two different questions and answers.
If I could have only one, (In the US), I would choose a 12 ga shotgun. that would allow me protection, hunting of almost all game and recreational shooting.
My favorite all time cartridge, the .44mag, followed closely by 45-70.

I fixed it. I was thinking cartridge designation not actual bore or groove dia.

What, no multiple choice?
My favorite is .30-30, yet I shoot .45 Colt a LOT more! It's ALL good.
Edit: I also voted before I saw the stpulation, but still answered correctly. Loadings for defense, plinking, targets and hunting large game and small! Even shotshells for rabbit, snake & flying rats!

Up in Alaska the critters laugh at anything less than .444...

Well, gosh, if I can only have one, I guess I would have to go with a shotgun, because I love to hunt Pheasant too much, so in that case I would probably choose one of my Browning A5's with a riflesighted deer barrel, smoothbore and add screw in chokes to it. With that I pretty much could hunt anything I wanted to, at least in the lower 48, but I wouldn't be really happy about it.

Hmmm, I found this while searching for info on Ysabel's M92 in .45Colt..
And don't know how I missed this thread - well, yeah I do. It's been busy..
But my most used is still the .357 Magnum. Much as I like other rounds, this one is the most versatile for me. It will fit in everything from a 2" J frame to a 24" rifle.
Second is the .44 Special.

the poll asks which cartridge DO you use, not which is your favorite. I shoot more .22 because it's cheap and easy but if I could only pick one, that wouldn't be it.
I'm starting in reloading and once I find a favorite load, that will influence my choice. It will probably be a 30-30 or 35 Rem load. I'll be able to find my favorite load/caliber and afford to shoot it a lot as well.
