Rattlesnakes and horse-hair lariats
Anyone know what it is about a horse-hair rope that supposedly keeps rattlers from crossing them, as shown in that old silent film clip Pitchy linked to in his rope-making thread?
I have read this in several places. Wonder if it is the texture of the hair or the scent, or something else. Might be a useful article from the past for camping down here in our snake-infested desert.

I dont but I remember reading it too, maybe in a comic book when I was a kid. My folks and me drove to california from wisconsin in about 1955 when I was fourteen "on a budget". Folks had a 1953 Nash Statesmen that the front seat would lay down into a bed. They pulled off the road and slept to save on motels. I slept in the open and strung a regular rope around my blankets per comic book!

Well if you read it in a comic book or saw it in a movie it must be true. Then again as the man said “there’s a sucker born every minute”.

Jeepnik, wait, you mean you didn't take the stuff you read in comic books seriously? Man did you miss out! Next thing you're going to try to tell me is that the Hardy Boys weren't real.

I read about this as a kid in a book called" Johnny Texas. " I too am infested with rattlesnakes at my place. I would sleep a whole lot better in the bed of a Chevy, than trusting my testicles to a coiled rope

Me being me, I'd wake up in the middle of the night, see the rope and shoot it thinking it was a snake ...

I slept out in the open when in the Army. I almost drowned a couple of times when the area we were ordered to stay in filled with water. Our Platoon Sergeant was the one who did that to us. He was a 4 watt nightlight in a 150 watt world.

I'm VERY allergic to horses so I'd take my chances with the snattlerakes.

Re: Rattlesnakes and horse-hair lariats
I never did have a rattlesnake bother me at night. We once woke up with the M60 on the tripod under almost 5 feet of water. It is shocking at how some folks get promoted to the limit of their incompetence.
No allergies to horses, but I don't own a horsehair rope.

I believe Mr. Green Jeans conducted a similar demonstration on Captain Kangaroo.
Re: Rattlesnakes and horse-hair lariats
Pete not to nit pick but that ain’t a rattlesnake and the rope looks like hemp.

That rope may also be manila or sisal.
