A little more bullet porn
I always appreciate seeing good lookin' bullets produced by my fellow levergunners. Here are some pics of my own casting session from yesterday.
Here they are fresh from the mould And then after lubing And the levergun they will feed About 15 lbs of bullets but at 535 grains each it doesn't amount to all that many; right at 200 bullets. But that should keep me going a while, though am also supplying bullets to friend Butch while we explore this BPCR thing....

Re: A little more bullet porn
Any recommendation for the best reference source for design, casting and making? I would like to give it a try

What are they sized to, and what lube do you use? Todd/3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

I've had the privilege of handling and loading Earl's bullets, and I can tell you they are perfection -- something for a so-so caster like meinzelf to aspire to.

Re: A little more bullet porn
I have a .459 sizer in the Lyman lubrisizer for the ones I size but mostly they get treated thusly: This pic was with the melted lube just poured before it had even started to cool. Mix started as equal parts beeswax, Crisco, and olive oil which seemed a little too soft for handling so we added about 10% more beeswax. Also has a few ounces of lanolin just for grins. This lube mix was recommended by Brownie, a fellow who shoots dang near everything with black powder. Including his 25/20. So I figure he knows something about lube for black powder cartridges and am adopting his recipe.3leggedturtle wrote: ↑Thu May 09, 2019 12:31 pm What are they sized to, and what lube do you use? When the lube gets good and cool friend Butch will pop the "pie" out of the pan and push the bullets out ready to load into a 45/70 case.

Earl, is that Brownie from the COSSA range BPCR gang?
I have not had good luck with pan lubing, but realized in the after-action analysis that I should have warmed the bullets first so the melted lube would properly adhere in the lube grooves.

That's right Bill, I refer to the "Brownie" you would have met out at the Buffalo shooting range. He has taken Butch and I under his wing to teach us the ropes of this Black Powder thing.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2019 6:37 am Earl, is that Brownie from the COSSA range BPCR gang?

And we haven't had any trouble with the lube not staying in the grooves -- hadn't known that was something to worry about.

Re: A little more bullet porn
Earl, maybe it was just me. I cast some boolits for the .56-50 Spencer, pan lubed with SPG and when it came time to push them out, only about half the lube adhered to the grooves. I was of course a bit flummoxed.
Re: A little more bullet porn
thanks for the specifics of the formula.
I have some lead and some molds, don't know when I will get around 2it!

Re: A little more bullet porn
Earl: I started out in 1984 shooting Black Powder cartridges in a Browning B-78 .45-70-- a handful on both ends! Probably 95% of my shooting is with my Black Powder cartridge rifles. Back in 2009, I started to paper patch and have not looked back. Tedious, requires attention to detail, but I find it very satisfying shooting. Good luck with your efforts.

Re: A little more bullet porn
Fellow over on Castboolits who goes by rfd has fixed me up with quite a lot of stuff to try the paper patching (even giving me a mould!). One thing and another has happened and I haven't had near enough time to try all this out, but I'll yet be trying the paper patching. My tang sight just barely elevates enough to hurl those 535 grainers to 1000 yards; I'm hoping the paper patchers might make it to the 1200 yard "buffalo" at max sight setting. I plan on trying it out on Friday. 'Tis a little on the tedious side all right, especially for us beginners!Ray Newman wrote: ↑Mon May 13, 2019 9:53 pm Earl: I started out in 1984 shooting Black Powder cartridges in a Browning B-78 .45-70-- a handful on both ends! Earl, good luck hitting that buffalo. I whanged away at it with a Model 1884 Trapdoor with the Buffington sights and still couldn't find the beast. Lots of fun at that good old range.
