7x57
I got my first 7x57 over 40 years ago an Ruger 77R tang safety gun . Since then I’ve had a Ruger 77R MK-II and a Kimber 89 BGR Super Grade . Also have two drilling’s with 7x57R barrels but I don’t count the drilling’s for me they’re more of a novelty . Anyway I ran across a Mannlicher Schoenauer MCA Carbine in 7x57 and it appears to be heading my way ! Got it from a GB auction and hence that's where the pics are from .

Re: 7x57
I've got plenty .284" bullets in the appropriate weight range 130-150 grains . Know where the dies are I just need to dig around and see if I still have a couple hundred pieces of WIN or REM 7x57 brass

I have an older Leupold Vari XII 2-7 that will sit nicely on top this rifle !

A most perfectly balanced cartridge for deer.
Re: 7x57
I have a 7mm08. Not quite the same, but not too different. Effective on deer and wild pigs, and not much recoil.

Re: 7x57
I’ve actually had more 7-08’s than 7x57’s and like them both . It’s the same thing as the 243 vs the 6mm REM .

I've got something similar, mine however is a Mexican Mauser, 22" Douglas and if I remember I stocked it with Bastone walnut.
Sadly I haven't spent much time on load development since I can't hunt with it here. It wears a Leupold 2-7x.

You’re in Jersey if my memory serves , so all you need to do is start hunting New York or Pennsylvania some and you can use that Mauser

I always wanted a #1 International in 7X57. I ended up getting a standard in .308 instead. It's almost as good. Congratulations.

Great buy, 6-pt. I have always had a soft spot for Mannlichers -- and for the old 7X57.
Re: 7x57
About the only other cartridges you run across in an Mannlicher Schoenauer MC or MCA Carbine are the 6mm , 257 Roberts and 358 WIN with a few being chambered in 6.5x54 MS I’d like to find an MC or MCA Carbine in 6.5x54 MS but that’s about it I’m not to worried about the other three .Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2019 2:31 pm Great buy, 6-pt. Just received the Mannlicher Schoenauer MCA 7x57 carbine . Got a few more stock bruises than I anticipated but still a deal for the price !

Re: 7x57
Okay in the next month I wanna get my 8x56 MS straight with a scope mounted as well as ammo loaded .
Then the ONLY other thing in the MS line I'd kinda like to have is another 6.5x54 MS but in a Model MC or MCA carbine and possibly a Steyr Zepheyr mannlicher stocked 22

Re: 7x57
Tonight at home the old Redfield 4x will come off and be replaced by an older Leupold Vari XII 2-7 .
And Friday I'll cart the rifle back to the shop with me along with some Nosler 140 BT's and three or four powders .
Perhaps I can get to the range Saturday .

It looks good. A few minor bumps and bruises from use are always to be expected. They give character.

Re: 7x57
Put Leupold on little while ago put two shins front and back rings and scope rubs slightly . Tommorrow at the shop I’ll remedy that and load some Nosler and Hornady polymer tipped bullets for the 7x57 and 8x56 !

I have this Ruger in 7X57. It`s a sweetheart caliber. Low recoil, accurate and flat shooting. Mine shoots to the same POA with light or heavier bullets.

Re: 7x57
I “had” a 77 RSI tang safety rifle in 308 . I liked the gun itself well enough but that thing was a bit rough from the bench . Of the four guns that have thumped me noticeably at the bench one was a Ruger 1H in 458 Win Mag shooting stout 510 grain handloads , two were Remington Model 7 stainless synthetics in 308 and the other was the tang safety 77 RSI 308 . And this is coming from someone that’s had plenty experience shooting hammers from the bench . The “perceived” recoil from my Ruger 1H 416 Rem Mag with my 400 grain handloads felt less than the 308’s . The perceived recoil from my handloads in my buddies 505 Gibbs was way less than the 458 Win Mag . Strangely my present Mannlicher Schoenauer MC carbine in 308 has none of the smack those other three 308’s possessed but the MS weighs probably a pound to pound and a half more.Booger Bill wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 5:10 pm I have this Ruger in 7X57. Re: 7x57
My first 7X57 was a tang-safety Ruger 77 circa late 1970s. I never could get it to shoot despite changing scopes and loads, and believe this was from the early "bad barrel" era before Ruger started making its own barrels. I later had a Ruger No. 1 in this caliber that just loved the Hornady 154-grain spire point. I believe this rifle ended up in the hands of our friend MarlinMan in partial payment toward a Ballard.
I've had a couple of the beautifully made Löwe Berlin Model 1895 Mausers and they shot well with moderate loads and 175-grain RN bullets.
Jack O'Connor thought a lot of this cartridge, and I still think highly of both of them.

Re: 7x57
Ruger of course made the 7x57 in the 1A but once upon a time they made it in the 1B I’d have liked to get my hands on one of them a few years back , I’m pretty sure with that long barrel you could wring plenty velocity from it . I can remmember reading O’Conner articles about him plunking a sheep or three using a custom 7x57 with a peep sight no less . I always wanted a 1A just never did find one at the right price when I was in the market . The 77R tang safety as well as I can remmember shot okay with factory Norma ammo but that was forty years ago and my parameters have changed quite a bit . The 77R MK-II I had did okay with handloads but it was no tack driver . If this MS carbine does 1 1/2 MOA I’ll be plenty satisfied as it won’t typically be hunted in places were a shot over 125-150 yards is a possibility . To be honest the shots will most likely be in the 30-90 yard range .Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2020 12:39 pm My first 7X57 was a tang-safety Ruger 77 circa late 1970s. Re: 7x57
Just got back from the range . Very promising results with the 7x57 and 8x56 MS . Only shot the 8x56 at 25 yards as it’s only got one rudimentary blade sight at the moment and this is the first time I’ve fired the gun other than once in the snail last week in the 14 or so years we’ve owned the gun . Anyway the 8x56 shooting the Hornady 170 SST looked good with the following charges W748 45 grs , W748 46 grs , N-135 42.5 grs and IMR4895 44 grs . I shot the 7x57 at only 50 yards but still made some headway and the following pics show the best groups with each of the three powders I tried .

Re: 7x57
Also shot up the last 15 rounds of PPU 6.5x54 MS 156 grain factory at dirt clods in the 100 yard berm today . And a Colt New Frontier Buntline 22LR did pretty well at 25 yards also . After that I went over to the skeet field and shot with some folks I know with a pair of guns I’d not shot skeet with yet . First a Parker VHE 12 gauge 26” IC/M (I’d only shot that one a few times at dove in September) and a circa 1969 Browning A-5 Lite 12 26 1/2” mod ( that one I’d just shot it in the front yard patterning buckshot and seeing POI for factory Foster slugs). Anyway all in all good day ! Had a box of 7x57 handloads using the Nosler 140 BT but decided to hold off on those nine groups until the next trip .

Looks good and a very "useful" chambering 7x57!

Re: 7x57
7X57 has a good reputation earned the hard way. I don't have one, but that does not stop me from learning what others have experienced with it. A caliber doesn't stay around for 100 years if it cannot do the job. It may be hard to find when it is 250 years old, but that is a ways off.

Re: 7x57
I've been racking my brain, I remember one of the ivory hunters in a panic pulled bullets with his teeth turned them nose into the case and shot an elephant with his 7x57.... Bell ?
BROWN LABS MATTER !!
Re: 7x57
Yes, pretty sure it was Bell. Didn't he shoot a bunch of them with the 303 as well?
Re: 7x57
Just returned from the range . Shot 17 three shot groups with the 7x57 scoped and four groups with the 8x56 MS iron sights . The better results of the trip .

Re: 7x57
OMG , IMR 4350 and IMR 4831 were my MAIN two bolt action powders for years . Something is wrong if I don’t have eight pounds or more of both powders at all times .
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !
Re: 7x57
4350 gives the best accuracy in my .30-06, not necessarily top velocity. A different powder has given better velocity with 180 grain bullets, but it is less than 50 fps better. The accuracy is not nearly as good. Best accuracy seems a better goal for practical applications.
