I recently purchased a new 1886 only to find the chamber is super tight. The lever will not easily close on either factory nor gauged reloads. They chamber perfectly fine in my newer Marlin GBL.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Re: 1886 Chamber
yes, some have short chambers, some have very short , tight throats. mine is a 1980's browning.... i got a throating reamer and had the throat re cut. worked fine after that, and is extremely accurate
it was a common problem with the miroku rifles. usually an easy fix.

I did some testing with a dummy round and the throat .0125 shorter than my marlin.

Re: 1886 Chamber
The Miroku-made 86es have little to no leade or throat forward end of the cchamber.
I've had to throat-ream a dozen or more, for cast bullet loads.
A .458" piloted reamer does the job nicely..

Re: 1886 Chamber
this is from memory, so, you know...,
I think the Moroku 45/70s are chambered strictly the SAAMI spec...
stand by . . ,
It almost looks like it headspaces on the cartridge rim.... anyway, you might measure the brass length to see if that's what's bumping...

I would be tempted to go 45-90 if I were reaming any way
