mainspring on an original 1873
I've recently acquired my first 1873 Winchester, one which had been reworked by Turnbull about 15 years ago. I'm surprised how heavy is the hammer pull, and that in turn makes for an action very stiff to open. Is this a consequence of the huge firing pin on these, or can the mainspring be lightened significantly? (The tensioning screw is already backed off, and I can't imagine why it was provided.) I'm certainly willing to buy a replacement mainspring and start working that down, or will this just result in a rifle that only goes click instead of bang?
