I've always read about ivory letter openers in old victorian era novels.....seems that bovine bone is certainly more readily available than elephant/walrus teeth.
Thanks Ray, yep can get a bone from a local butcher.
It`s a little wet inside yet should whiten up more later.

Lenn, I bet she gets tougher and better able to hold an edge with a little time.
Somewhere I read that different game animals have different bone densities in their lower legs, with antelope being among the toughest!
Thanks gents, Bill i think your right but my problem is i can`t sharpen any knife worth a hill of beans.

Very nice. Attached is a Gunstock Battle Axe that I made out of a piece of oak that I had, I need to get motivated to finish it but not 100% certain I want to put a steel blade on it just yet. The knife is from a friend that is a great flint napper but not much of a hunter. I gave him 3 moderate racks that I had laying around and in his gratitude he made me a hide scraper and this knife. The European Mount is from last years buck.

When I have a knife that is hard to get an edge on, I get some sandpaper and wrap it tight around a 1x2 and use the sandpaper directly on the blade. I think I start with 220 and end up at 400.

Nice and thanks those mounts are a lot of work, i did one once and mounted it on the front of the wood side car we made.
Nice looking knife i`m thinking on making another in that shape with a antler handle, i have tried using sand paper and it does work good.

After looking at a bunch of old Native American knives it looks like they carried knives that look like modern kitchen knives like these made by Old Forge company.

You cant beat those old carbon steel blades (1095). They sharpen up pretty quick on a butcher steel. You probably still have at least one old circular saw blade laying around. They make excellent blades that will sharpen right up.

I really like the stylr and utility of the old knives, got a few Old hickorys
You can sharpen any old knife with a spring steel blade with a Mill fine file or even a rock to a using edge.
Here are a few of mine
A 8 inch Old Hickory double edge throwing Knife,a 10 inch butcher knife and a Paring knife with a sheath I made for neck carry, good for odd Jobs around the house and cutting food at a restaurant.
a 14 inch butcher knife I keep in the side door of my truck that I use as a light machete
Closer pic of the wood sheath I make for the Butcher knives
Pitchy's battle axe reminds of cooper's chingachgook character, you know, the next to last of the mohicans.
Those axes, often using sections of old rifle/musket stocks for handles with a skull knob on one side and a blade opposite, makes me think of another continent and henry haggard's zulu character umslopogaas and his weapon, nkosi-kaas ..... "a beautiful weapon, long light & slender, the haft fashioned from an enormous rhinoceros horn, flexible as cane, bound at intervals with brass wire & a knot at the end to prevent the hand from slipping.".......
"it was but rarely that (he) used the crashing doubled handed stroke: on the contrary, he did little more than tap continually at his adversaries head, pecking at it with the pole-axe end of the axe as a woodpecker pecks at rotten wood..."
Thanks for the pics of your knives bcraig i like your wood sheaths.
Ray that movie is where i got the idea, here`s the full size version.

Well Brad there are some variables as Bill mentioned like the type of bone used some are harder than others, i`m on a learning curve myself so can`t give much info about it.
I know those arrow heads i made from deer antler seem to sharpen up better, a search on the web on the subject would probably be helpful.
