338 Marlin Question
If a fella wanted to have a levergun built for 338 Marlin Express......any idea what caliber base gun would be required? I already have an MXLR in 338 but am thinking something custom would be fun.

Re: 338 Marlin Question
Probably the Marlin 1895 or the Winchester 1886. The 338 ME, if you open the neck to 45 cal. is essencially a shortened 45-70, with a different rim and probably thicker brass to handle the pressure.
Always wondered what the performance would be if necked to 7mm. Probably like a 280 Rem.

Re: 338 Marlin Question
Ruger has stated their intentions to eventually re-introduce the previous models and calibers, although it will certainly take awhile.

Re: 338 Marlin Question
I have both the MX and The MXLR in .338 . If Ruger was to get serious about the .338 with different weight bullets they could set the world on fire. I have a target somewhere that I shot with Remington 250grn bullets out of the Mx at 100 yards. 5 shots in one inch. Remlin could hardly make a 30-30 until the last few years of production. I don't think We will ever see another .338. .

Re: 338 Marlin Question
Being a 338 fan, having both a Win Mag and in Federal one the ME would be on my list if Ruger brought it back.
BROWN LABS MATTER !!
Re: 338 Marlin Question
I had two of the 338 ME and two of the 308 ME that were factory guns . All four did fine for me so I’d not worry about building one . Both of these cartridges and the 450 Marlin had different threads from the 336,444 and 1895 . One is v threads and the others square threads but as I said I’ve forgotten which was which .

Re: 338 Marlin Question
How about a Savage 99 chamberd for a 308-338 or 284-338 ? great selection of bullets!
I was going to do one or the other at one time but it just never happened

Re: 338 Marlin Question
Well if it’s reasonably priced I’d be inclined to buy that and rebarreling it to 338 ME .

Re: 338 Marlin Question
Heck, I would put a 7mm barrel on it and make a 7mm Marlin Express.
Re: 338 Marlin Question
I always felt like I missed out on the 356 Winchester and thought I might pick up a 338 Marlin when they debuted, with dies, brass and bullets too of course. I held a beautiful MX rifle but didn’t buy it. Shortly after, Marlin sold out to Remington, 338 was out of production and hard to find. I did buy a Ruger Hawkeye in 338 RCM from a fellow. It is a bit more than 338 Marlin or Federal. Realistically it is in the 338-06, 350 REM mag, 35 Whelan class, but in a very short and handy bolt rifle. That Marlin was very nice though.
Re: 338 Marlin Question
Had a 356 but prefer a longer barrel, so, sold the 356 and sent a 30-30 to JES and had it re-bored and chambered in 356.

Likely not mine either..
Re: 338 Marlin Question
JES should be able to rebore a 308 ME to a 338 ME.
He did a 338 WSM and a 358 WSM for me on some BLR takedown barrels, and a 50AK on a Marlin 1895 that I sent him the barreled receiver.
