Nothin better than chain drive, had two bikes with belt drive and ruined both on this dirt road i live on.
That`s the main reason i went back to old bikes, more dependable.
Chains, the better way.

Re: A chopper it is, then.
Tomorrow morning we are going to try to start it. This is were it sits right now. There are still lots of little things to do but I think we have enough to hear it run. Fingers crossed.

Awesome!!! Idles really nice. That must be a good feeling, building one from the ground up. I can't wait for a ride report!
I am and have been looking for a project bike for a while now. I haven't seen just the right one but am confident I will find one before long.
Great job on your Harley!!

Re: A chopper it is, then.
Thanks folks. I rode it a little later. I was having a little trouble on take off until I realized that the shift pattern is 1st gear up and the rest are down. Its the FX shifter arm on the FL tranny that is the variable. It will get changed at some point. Leaks? Yes we have a few to deal with but nothing that scares me. It still starts hard. It seams that easy flooding is an issue.

Couldn`t tell in the video but if your going to let it run for a long time on the lift set up a big fan to blow accross the cylinders to keep her cool.
What carb did you end up using, make sure the float level is correct regardless.
Your having fun bro.

Re: A chopper it is, then.
Great that you've got it running!
The idle may be a bit high, or the timing may be off slightly, it doesn't seem to have the irregular cadence of an idling Harley.
What carb are you using? Most of mine liked just a turn or two choked with the switch off to prime it (kick or two with kick starter), then no choke with a little throttle open if not real cold. If using the electric start, a couple turn overs to prime, then turn the choke off while continuing to run the starter and the throttle open a touch. Each has its own magic combination it seems. Are you using a manual advance distrubutor? If so, it needs to be retarded when starting to keep from damaging the starter bendix drive. Most of mine, when manaully advanced/retarded, liked about 1/2 way retarded to start, then advanced as soon as it was running. With electric start, it may need to be fully retared to start to keep from damaging the bendix drive. The manuals ones usually need a spring to keep them advanced when running, with jusy enough friction in the stud to keep them retarded when starting. If you have an automatic advance distibutor (with the spring weighted centrifugul advance mechanism), you shouldnt have to do anything with it to start it. Have you timed it running yet? They can be static timed with automatic advance distributors, but you need to use small pieces of rubber tubing to advance the weights to get an accurate advance timing. The front intake needs to just open, then close, then the timing mark on the flywheel will come up in the timing window on the left side.
