Thanks gents.

Can`t get the video to up-load right now so here`s a pic.
The new engine runs good, so quiet ya can hardly hear it run but it`s kicking out water so guess it`s worth building a boat for.

The video has the new factory boat running in it.
Coming soon.

I like the music of your home-made pop-pop the best, Pitch.

Motor sounds are soothing and fascinating.

One of my faves from Youtube:

Probably no way to tune the sounds from a pop-pop ...

Unbelieveable! Yep, a battery and servo for steering would be necessary for me! I guess in this case, a "flame-out" wouldn't be quite the disaster it would in an airplane!

Played to the end for me, I think Pitchy.

I really like the wood boat. In Alaska we'd call that a power scow. They are common in the fishing industry. Or were, they're not getting replaced. If you deck it over to the sheerline and put the wheelhouse on top of that you'll have the flavor.

In New Jersey and along the eastern seaboard that form might be called a garvey. Before engines they were sailing scows tho.

Music to my ears. Thanks for the dream boats.

I`m not sure how this engine in this boat will work or how fast it will go.
I think the boiler is to big but i`m just learning about these things myself.

this is a pretty good representation. they were mainly used as packers but I've seen them rigged as long liners and pot fishermen.

http://www.google.com/search?q=power+sc ... 68&bih=871

your wood one has very good proportions to my eye. I'm sure it could be scaled up to almost any size and perform well.

Image

I fished around this one. It is set up for tendering fish. I've sold to her or to others just like her. You can see a fishing boat on the starboard side unloading or cleaning up after unloading more likely.

I rode down from Alaska on a tugboat last september. This scow, Afognak, came alongside the barge and took fuel while we were anchored up near Petersberg. I mis-remembered that little detail.

Like seeing old friends.

Hey there Cap'n. I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. Does the water go in one tube and out the other? Is there a need for two tubes or is this just for even looks? Am I correct in that it appears that there is a downward slope to the flat boiler and the round boiler has the entry of the tubes above the bottom so the the boilers just holds a little water?

Gobbler, the water goes in and out of both tubes.
The water flashes in the boiler which pushes all the water out the tubes. After that the steam cools in the tubes creating a vacuum which then draws water back in the tubes to the boiler and the process repeats.
Can be any number of tubes.

I`m not sure about the solid boilers as i don`t believe all the water in those boilers is pushed out and refilled that fast, gotta find out about that.

Fellers, i made a jig for making a small diaphram engine today and built an engine.
I`m waiting for the high temp silicone to set up then will give it a test run.
If it runs i will post a tutorial of the build.

Ok here we go.
The dimensions after the edges are folded over.
Width- 2 in.
Length-2 3/4

Tubing is 1/4 OD copper and 8 inch long.
Solder is plumber acid core.

The jig is made by cutting a hole in the bottom part as big as you want your engine to be, the dished part.
The other top plate had a piece of metal about 1/8 th in. thick tapered on the sides that fits flush in the hole in lower plate.
Lay a piece of light tim on the jig and center the top and hammer or press them together and it will form a dish in the tin.
Then slit the corners and bend about 1/8 th in of the edges up.
Then drill a hole or two depending how many tubes ya want in the end and solder the tube in as shown.
Put a bead of high temp silicone around the inside edge of the plate as shown and lay a piece of copper or pop can tin in and bend the edges over and squeeze them down with a pliers.
Let the silicone dry as i didn`t because i wanted to get this video done for this thread and it sprung a small leak.
Prime the engine, be sure the boiler is full and water is coming out the tube. Hold your finger over the end of the tube and put in the water.
Put a candle under the boiler and test run.
If ya have any questions ask away and i`ll try and answer the best i can.
Tube size and the number of tubes is up to you, this size engine normally would have two tubes half as big as the one i put on it, seems to work fine. :)

This is fascinating. I wonder how large this could be scaled up? For example, could it be scaled up to the size of a one-man boat?

I know you will make 'em go. There was a discussion on the British site stating that they don't scale up because you lose efficiency when you enlarge the piping. I was wondering why you couldn't constrict the outlet for the venturi effect, increasing thrust. Might take some flapper valving or something to control back pressure and water flows.

Here's another power scow picture, this one anchored up in my back yard during the dog salmon gill net fishery.
This one seems to be set up for refrigerated seawater to hold the catch. It's a well known part of the fishing fleet. You can see the wood hull form. They evolved from unpowered salmon trap tenders that were tugged around to the spots to collect the fish from the fish weirs and wheels.

Betcha never thought I'd say anything nice about evolution, eh?

Thanks for sharing your boats and motors. How long until the pond thaws?

Thanks Grizz and cool picture 8)

It will be end of March or April before that skating ring thaws out , depending on the weather.

I read a little about big engines and the one i saw only pulesed once every four seconds.
But if the pulse was big enough with a couple tubes and ya were on calm water it might move ya.
It will be a fun project neverless.
