Is 2100 fps doable out of a .30-.30 Trapper???

Post by Win94 »

Just wondering if any of you folks have any experience shooting a .30-.30 Trapper with velocities in the 2100 neighbourhood with a 170grain bullet or would this be a pipe dream with the 16.5" barrel???

Don't know as I never clocked mine but the deer fell just the same.

Good question, when I look at 14" barrel TC data I'm allways amazed how little it has lost and so didn't worry about.

Good point Nath. I enjoy looking over the data for a 14" contender as it would be fairly close in comparison.

I have not been able to do that with Dads trapper in 30 WCF. Here are chronographed loads out of the trapper versus what the manuals state for normal barrels. note first number is what the manual states, second is what I measured ie: manual/chrono
Sierra 110 gn HP (singly loaded since it is a HP): 2500/2120, 2600/2200
Sierra 150 gn FN 2100/1785
Speer 110 gn HP 2600/2100 (WW 760), 2600/2150 (WW748)
Speer 150 gn FN 2300/1890
Speer 170 gn FN 2200/1830 estimated*
Win 150 gn FNPP 2300/1890
*The only 170 gn I have listed in my notes as estimated...probably due to chrono malfunction so i didnt get all the data. Note though that velocities range from 80-85% what the books list for their velocities. If this holds up for all 170 gn data then you would need a load listed around 2550 fps for a 170 gn bullet out of a normal length barrel. Chrono was an Oehler brand. Velocity is 15 feet from muzzle.

It should be doable.

With my 14" Contender I chronographed an average of 2154fps with the following load:

165gr Sierra HPBT, 29.2gr Reloder 12, Federal cases and Federal #210 large rifle primers.

Out of my Trapper, factory Remington and Winchester 170gr loads have all come in around 1950fps. Out of my 20" 336, both are around 2025fps.

I've only used the reloading manuals' max load with the Rem 170gr (almost all are for 24" barrels) and I've not gotten up to 2100fps for the Trapper.

The 14" contender gets 2000fps with lots of 170 grain loads from what i studied last night. The Trapper should no prob. Time to buy a chrony and see.

These more optimistic loads don't match my experience with a 20" barrel with factory 170s or what you would expect from the Hodgdon #26 reloading manual but there is some variance from gun to gun. I would fall in with meanc on expectations.

Borregos example uses a slightly lighter bullet with less bearing surface and 1.8 grs less powder and 10" less barrel length than the Hodgdon manual and gets 50+ fps higher velocity than their max load that they list as generating 37,700 cup. I wouldn't think that would likely happen in another rifle as an expectation.
