Re: powder
I think so
Re: powder
My father reloaded for his Browning 12ga and used to interchange his loads with 540ms and HS-6. So I'm sure those two powders are on par with each other.
I know HS-6 can easily be used for all of the 357mag 44mag 45colt rounds and load data can be found on Hodgdon's reloading page.
By seeing where it sits on the "burn rate chart" you could load up a few starting 10% below the minimum of HS-6 and slowly working up from there.
• 57 HS-5, Hodgdon
• 58 AL7, Alcan
• 59 W-540MS, Winchester
• 60 HS-6, Hodgdon
• 61 W-540, Winchester

Re: powder
According to my Speer #10 reloading manual Olin 540 "...is for Magnum Shotshell loads and can be used in some Magnum handgun loads...", and is listed as slower then Alcan-7 but faster than Hodgdon HS7. There isn't any load data that I could find. It's the earliest Speer manual I have (1979), and my Lyman #45 (1970), doesn't list it at all.

Re: powder
The only data I could find was in the Speer #7 for the 22 jet.
I have a couple of burn rate charts that puts it smack dab between hs6 and bluedot.
If I were going use it I'ld treat it like hs6 and be very careful.

Re: powder
Speer 5 shows the 22 jet loads and shotshell loads for the 12,20,16 and 28 guage shells.
Re: powder
Why don't you give Hodgdon a call, they are now distributing Winchester powders. If I remember correctly (not a given), several of Win/Hodg powders were mfg by St Marks Powder Co and were the same powders (W296/H110, W231/HP38 are a couple of examples).

Re: powder
Thanks guys, all good ideas, I figure five pounds of powder is worth some research, I do shoot shotgun, but it would take me a while to shoot it up in .20 guage.
