Only three Confederates ever held the rank of general in the U.S. Army following the war. Matthew C. Butler, Fitzhugh Lee, and Joe Wheeler.
My wife is distantly related to Fitzhugh Lee.
Andrew Carnegie, Henry A. Dupont, Cornelius Vanderbilt, George Dewey, and "Kit" Carson served for the North. Samuel Clemens and Jesse James served for the South.
Poet Albert Pike wrote stanzas of the popular southeran version of "Dixie", a tune which actually originated in New York City in the 1850's.
During the Shenandoah Valley campaign of 1862 "Stonewall" Jackson marched his force of 16,000 men more than 600 miles in 35 days. Five major battles were fought and four seperate Union armies, totalling 63,0000 were defeated.

Re: OT- War between the States Part 5.
Very interesting! I thought that Joe Wheeler was the ONLY ex Confederate to rise to the rank of General in the US Army after the War. He was one of three. Thanks for the info.
