Pig Hunt with 100 year old Marlin
I went on a "canned" hunt this last weekend at "Super G Ranch" in Morley MI.
I shot a nice sow with a 113 year old Marlin 1893 in 38-55.
Boolit was cast of 25/1 pure lead/tin mix. Driven approx 1800fps with 33gr IMR 4895 40 yard broadside shot through boiler room destroyed both lungs and severed aorta from heart. Boolit stopped at off side ribcage. recovered boolit expanded to .750 and weighed 218 gr. My huntin pa used 30-30 with hard cast LBT 150 gr WFN and kilt a nuther sow. Boolit penetrated 10 -12" of front shoulder, passed into lung cavity destroying both lungs and went missing somewhere inside pig. Nice 1" + wound channel and porker was down and dead very fast.

I thought this thread was going to be about hunting politicians.
Thanks for the account of your hunt. When's dinner?

Ohio hunter , glad to hear of your success and glad to hear from someone else who likes using the old birds for hunting
I used my circa 1906 marlin 1893 in 32-40 in 2005 to take a smallish 3 point whitetail with the RCBS 32-170GC bullet .Then in 2006 I used my Marlin 1895 circa 1896 in 40-65 to take a fat doe with the Lyman 402169 bullet and then again in 2006 I used a my Marlin 1895 circa 1897 in 38-56 to take another doe with the Lyman 375449GC bullet !
Every year I try and take a couple deer with home cast bullets . Not always in real old guys like these but "usually" older Marlin's nontheless .
Again congrats

Re: Pig Hunt with 100 year old Marlin
I thought I stated it was approx 40 yard shot. We are butchering tomorrow and taking hams and bacon to locker to be cured/smoked. I will cut the chops and roasts then the rest is ground for summer sausage and little slim jim type snack sticks. I am going to render some lard for bp lube making too! There were water buffalo there for $750 and cow buffalo (bison) for $850 for a 1000LB'er. Mebbe next time the 45-70 will go along.
I shoot cast almost exclusivly these days and it performs well if I do my part and test in media when working up loads.

Congrats! Nothing wrong with a good canned hunt At least you know you'll get an opportunity to shoot something...

Re: Pig Hunt with 100 year old Marlin
I thought that nothing less powerful than a 7mm Remington Magnum, or .45-70 'hot' load, would suffice for pigs. That's the consensus of all the gun magazine articles.
And it has to be stainless steel, and have a synthetic stock, and a TACTICAL sling...
Oh yeah, and some sort of scout-ghost-laser-tritium sights.
You must just be dreaming - they never killed pigs or anything bigger than a small bunny rabbit with those old guns.

Nice job, I love hunting those pigs.

Canned or not, you still have to shoot straight. Good Job!
