Leveraction makes meat

Post by WCF3030 »

Morning found me in my chair with a 1/2 inch of fresh snow on the ground outside, a slight breeze and hint of excitement in the air! Little did I know at that time I would have an encounter with such a fearsome beast.
Only the second day into spring and the creatures begin to emerge from the hollowed and dark cave from within the forbidden pine grove.
I was ready though with a rifle that I had known from childhood. With a worn stock and newly mounted fiber optic sight I was well versed and deadly accurate with this faithful lever action. Not one to be impressed with heavy bullet weight or f.p.s. I've always opted for the factory equivalent for ammo. It has always served me well in the field as well as at the range.
My first encounter with this animal was around 1700 when I caught a flash of movement from the corner of my eye. A deep bark from my lab/chow mix and a heart stopping shrill from my wife confirmed the beast presence.
But I had made a costly error and was not within reach of my rifle. Much drama ensued at that point and the creature made a mad dash and eluded me. A curse fell from my lips and I became determined to settle this.
4 more hours pasted until I heard another familiar shrill this time from my daughter who was confronted by the beast in a narrow pathway. This time the rifle was within easy reach and I called her to quickly move behind me.
The beast was quartering away with a glint of death in his eye and pooping his teeth I knew that I had time for only one well placed shot. Instinctively I shouldered my rifle in one fluid motion as I had done countless times before and sent a .177 cal ball his way. I can still hear the slap of the bullet hitting perfectly behind his shoulder, dead on his feet and still flopping I sent an insurance shot to his head. Thus ending his reign of terror!
Cheers went up and party ensued once the dead beast was presented before the tribe.

He was way to old and gamy for anything but burger with generous helpings of suet.

Too bad he was old and gamy - I think he may have fed the family for at least a week. So much meat going to waste!

Griff - looks like that ferocious feline might just snooze through the whole hunt!

You know you are under gunned with the .177 ball round. It's obsolete and under powered. The .177 should be retired or regulated to target practice only. I wouldn't use anything smaller then a .22 pellet. With the .22 pellet you get good penetration and expansion. The 22 pellet is inherently more accurate, and can be had in several different styles.

We have a 1/2" or so of snow here this morning too. I'll have to keep an eye out for the little brown creatures scurrying about in the white snow.

When I was a kid, and got my first .44 Magnum rifle, I happened to spy a chipmunk coming out of a hole in a grain bag in the barn, so....

I made a nice hole in the wheelbarrow, but the only 'meat' left was a tail about 20 feet away. Should have had the .177 I guess...

Was that a hard cast load or a controlled expansion load?
I'm guessing hard cast. You would have needed as much penetration as you could get.
I'm glad you had an adequate firearm instead of a spray. A spray would not have stopped that attack.
Glad you had a happy ending. Many people aren't so lucky.

Rkrodle,
While I respect your experince in such matters, your Elmer Kieth analogy is sadly mistaken. A properly placed .177 cal (BB) is a superior round.

Wise decision, creatures of this size can be easily missed. Similar too elephant hunting.

Yes hard cast. My experince with these monsters has guided my choice of caliber and bullet style. I've been approached by many bullet manufacturers to test there rounds but I prefer to "roll ' my own.

Chuck,
Sometime during hibernation the horns fall off, so during the spring hunt one must make sure to be sure of the beast gender.

When sleeping I would keep that levergun close by your side.
Those little buggers have family members that are revengeful.(they will really be breeding now)
I would attack the rest of them now before they gather their troops and attack you.
Get killer off the couch and let the hounds provide backup.
The rest that make it through you can potshot from high ground.(a nice tree limb)

Until then dont sleep with your mouth open, they will crawl in your throat and choke ya.
There is no turning back now since you drew first blood.

GOOD LUCK!!
