More than two years ago, and not 300# but here goes anyway.

Kansas whitetail buck, approx 275#
quartering toward me, head down feeding. Shot from slightly elevated position.
Shot in the base of the neck, bullet hit the spine and exited behind the left shoulder.
The deer fell in it's tracks. Bone fragments found all along wound channel.

bullet manufacturer: Remington
bullet weight: 405 JSP
velocity: ~1800 fps (55 grains of H335)
range: 125 yards
pass through or not: pass thru
expansion: unknown

Hit a nice blacktail from above and between the shoulder blades, snapped spine, turned south and found it lodged in pelvis, so I guess you could say it penetrated about 4' of deer after going thru bone. Prolly an easy pass thru if it had been almost any other angle.

Federal Factory with the 300 grain HotCor bullet, muz. vel of 1881fps IIRC. I don't have scales that will measure that heavy, but it looks like a near perfect mushroom and most of the mass seems to be there. That deer was hammered straight down and never twitched. This was prolly about a 40yd shot....maybe a hair less.

No bullet, no idea!

Oh, a 5 point Roosevelt bull elk, live weight prob'ly 'bout 500lbs or a bit more.

I've never recovered one of my 405 LFN 45/70 rounds. I don't hunt bears so deer is all I shoot but I shot one in the chest between the fore legs and the bullet exited it's right haunch, better than 4' later.

405 LFN by Aardvark Bullets
40 grains of H-4198
magnum primer
Lee FCD
1600 fps @ the muzzle of my 1895SS and my Ruger #1

There are bears around here and I have no doubts about being able to stop one if necessary.

Joe,

I used a Garrett 420 grain +P Hammerhead moving at 1850 fps to take the bison with you last August. It wasn't a long shot (about 45 yards). Took out both lungs and the far shoulder. No bullet recovered -- passed through entirely.

One cow elk, about 120 yards, Ruger #3 Federal factor ammo 300 gr JHP, hit in the lungs, exited, no bullet recovered.
Second cow elk, same rifle same ammo, hit in the ear at 90 yards no exit but I fished around and could not find any bullet pieces in the brain.

Mike Rintoul, This is a small world.
Your ammo is what I used and I honestly have to say whatever you did
your company has really come up with something in this round.

I have done some of my own informal testing and this ammo out penetrates my hot
FMC bullets out of my 375H&H . My friends did not believe it until they seen it
with their own eyes.
Again I feel that ammo would take cape buff/elephant/rhino etc.

PLEASE keep making those PUNCH BULLETS!!!
THANKS!!!

Where did you get a #1 with a 26" barrel? Everyone I've ever come across including the one I own is a 22". I agree with the "ANY BIG Tough animal, ANYWHERE!!!" statement.

Bear 45/70,

ya, I dont think Ruger ever made a factory 26 incher.
Mine was originally a 24 incher. I have had this baby about 40 years.
This first barrel was a heavy 24 inch sporter(Ruger#1S-24-H)
The reason I changed it ,years ago a close friend of mine was
a prior gunsmith for the old Ithaca Gun Company and he talked me into putting a 26 inch
ported barrel on it.If I remember correctly he charged me $140.00 and alot of beer!!!
Mine has about the nicest wood I have yet to see on one.
I also have one in 7mm mag (1985) I really wanted it in 264 win mag but they couldnt get it then.

Regards!!

Hey Joe,

It was about half of your weight restriction but you saw what
a 405 Gr hardcast GC over 48 grains of Varget did to that
Fallow deer.
Zipped through like a lazer. She took one step and fell down.

You still owe me a photo! :D
