Wonder why?

Post by jnyork »

I wonder why I can no longer find any neastfoot oil? Not at walmart, not at Target, not at Lowes, not at Home Depot, not at the PX, not at Midway, not at my local mom & pop sporting good store (they never heard of it! ) Did the EPA outlaw it or something?

Check at your local livestock supply/feed store . The one that the farmers and ranchers use , not the pet store .

Not so. We are over-run now with imports from the Left Coast including Kali, Western Oregon and coastal Washington, fine liberals all. They buy up 5-10 acre parcels, build a 4000-5000 square foot log house they call a "cabin", then start collecting horses. They dont ride 'em or anything, they just HAVE 'em. Wish they would just stay home.

Same problem hereabouts. I couldn't find it, even in tack stores, so I bought saddle oil. Next thing I saw it in a small hardware store amongst wood finishes - teak oil etc.

I read somewhere that neatsfoot oil is made from feet and shin bones of cattle, hence foot, and that neat was once a name applied to certain cows.

jnyork,

Tandy Leather has it:

...and, Mink Oil:

I have used Angelus Neatsfoot oil:

http://www.angelusshoepolish.com/

...and, their distributors' list:

http://www.angelusshoepolish.com/distrib.html

A local shoe repair store carries it. You may also look at a luggage repair shop for the oil.

How much oil do you get from squeezing a Mink?

I've tried to get Cat Oil to use in place of Mink Oil, but all I get are scratches...

Wheeler's shoe and boot repair here had several cans on the shelf today. If you want me to send you a couple of cans let me know.
