OT-Project Roller finally completed!
Well here's the finished project! Got the barrel home today, and ran right to the gun room and assembled the thing as fast as safely possible!
Hopefully get to the range this weekend and shoot her, if the monsoons don't hit and stop me!-Vall

Re: OT-Project Roller finally completed!
I think that is one of the classiest rifles I have ever seen. Congratulations on such a beautiful rifle! I'm really looking forward to the range report.
Re: OT-Project Roller finally completed!
Vall, that came out great! I just noticed the "high" hammer. Was that standard on the early RB's?
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Re: OT-Project Roller finally completed!
Thanks guys! The hammer has actually been chopped way down! It's civilian sporting action, but the hammer was a donor off a military or shotgun Roller, so I contoured and ground it down. I laid it on top of my Sporter to match the shape and rework it.-Valljdad wrote:Vall, that came out great! I just noticed the "high" hammer. Was that standard on the early RB's?

I've never been bit big by the roller bug, but I've got to say that changed my mind. You did an excellent job, Vall. Absolutely gorgeous piece of work. You have a right to feel proud of that one.

The new high wall may be the cat's ankles, but this one has got to be his elbows, at least! What a HANDSOME rifle. (I think
you should add a heel sight and shoot it from the Creedmore position... )
Your work is just top-notch! Enjoy!

Careful what you agree to. How much did that project end up costing if you dont mind me asking. I have been looking at a few actions on the auction sites.marlinman93 wrote:Sure can! Probably be much more fun if someone else was paying the bill!JReed wrote:That came out awesome!!

I love rolling blocks and I haven't owned one since I was 16. And now I see what I'm missing. ***!
That rifle looks great. More than great. Way beyond fabulous.... that rifle is from a parallel universe where imperfection doesn't exist.. just to remind me that it does!

Beee-aut-iful as Jackie Gleason would say! Refresh our memory (OK, mine at least ) as to what was done if you wouldn't mind please.

Re: OT-Project Roller finally completed!
Thanks again guys. Here's a run down of what was done.
Bought the receiver from a friend in Co. and it was a real #1 Sporter action, but had a military hammer and a shotgun breechblock and rotary extractor. I ordered a full round barrel from Green Mountain in .40 cal. 1-14" twist. Sent the action and barrel to John Taylor to have it fitted, contoured, and chambered to .40-65 cal. John cut it to 32" and tapered it .01" from chamber to crown. He also welded some large pits in the tang.
I sent two blocks of wood I had to Dave Crossno to have him semi inlet it to 90% stocks, then fitted them to the action and barrel, and fitted the engraved, skeletonized buttplate I got from Wind. Got a repro steel forearm tip from John King and fitted it to the forearm. Buttplate and forearm were left in the white to contrast the case colors and bluing. Stocks were stained with N35, and finished with 10 coats of Wipe-On Poly Satin.
Sent the receiver parts to Al Springer in Montana for case colors, and a local guy did the rust bluing on the barrel, and hot blued the block and hammer.
Other than the wood, I just did a lot of elbow grease and polishing, and fitting parts, then assembled it all when it came back in various pieces.

Awesome Vall. One hell of a job. Very, very nice rifle.
Hope your weekend is ok. It is raining here and I think we are having the same series of storms that are passing over OR and WA.
Once again. Very nice job and very nice rifle.

You sure did a fine job on that "toy", Vall. It's still raining down here, too.

Great looking rifle Val. If it shoots as good as it looks you'll have those guys with the itty bitty bullets and the plastic stocks scratching their heads.
