45-90 strikes again
I put my doe tag and that I drew and my Winchester Model 1886 in 45-90 (mgf 1888) to good use on opening day. I shot this mulie from 107 yards (according to my Leica range finder) with a home cast 350 grain gas check bullet on top of 27.0 grains of 5744 with a half sheet of TP on top of the powder. She was slightly down hill and quartering away from me when I made the shot. The bullet entered mid body just behind the shoulder and exited just above the brisket. She managed to run 20 yards before she dropped. Now looking forward to a winter of fine eating.

You shouldn't look so serious.

Re: 45-90 strikes again
Win40-82, thank you for posting that report and photos. Your report demonstrates levergunning at its finest ...... a classic 121-year old Winchester 1886 ..... a cartridge from the black powder era that is not seen much today ...... a home cast bullet ..... a well thought through load ..... a single shot, and at a good distance too, and a nice autumn doe for the freezer. It is the best way to hunt in my opinion. In a few weeks, our season will open. I'll be taking two rifles with me, including an original Winchester 1876 .45-60 and an original Winchester Model 53 .44 WCF. We'll see what happens. Loved your post!

Good show!
Cast bullet and good shooting did the job with minimal meat damage.
Looks like a large doe. Reckon what she weighs?

Re: 45-90 strikes again
I thought she was kind of big but have no idea of the weight. I gave up guessing weight years ago when I tried to guess what my wife weighed. Still have a scar from that one. Thanks to all for your kind comments. It was a real hoot. Might try to draw buck tag next year.crs wrote:Good show!
