Barrel mount Aperature sights?

Post by Canuck Bob »

I have shot receiver sights all my life. I just got a rifle not drilled and tapped and was hoping to get details of the barrel mount aperatures. I searched and found a number of posts with pictures and have viewed the many sites that sell these systems.

Looking for people who have used them a lot and how they like them. I'm interested in Marbles Bullseye, the little flip up designed for the Ranch Rifle, and the XS Ghost ring systems. The first two are priced right and would fit the gun best, Savage/Stevens 30G Takedown Favorite.

I use the takedown a lot and think I'll get less POI wander if the sights stay on the barrel. I'd have to drill and tap to get a sight up against the reciever to stay on the barrel. That got me thinking about the barrel mount systems in the existing dovetail.

I shoot both eyes open and have always been a good shot with traditional peeps. My Marlin 444 is a solid 200 meter rifle with the reciever sight and a number of moose can't disagree. This little Favorite gun would suit a tang sight so if you want, please discuss that in regards to a takedown rifle as well.

Barrel mounted peeps are not new. Oner version of the Krag rear sight had a flip up peep. Townsend Whelen in his book Mr. Rifleman, tells of his days as a young Army officers and he trained his men to use the peep and the scores of his men went up dramaticaly.

I have used this sight on the Krag and also a couple of MO-JO sights. They work just fine and do give better groups that an open sight. They are not near as fast as receiver mounted peep and I don't think they are quite as accurate. I don't have anything to base this on as I have never done a test on the subject.

My old win mod 67 22LR single shot has a barrel mounted peep and works pretty good. I learned to shoot with it and I could usually hit ground hogs regularly at 100 yds. Mind you it had a fairly long barrel and had a long sight radius. I have been thinking of trying one ragged hole sight on my circa 1942 mod 94 because the sight is getting fuzzy for me and I don't want a tang sight. I am not about to drill and tap for a Williams peep.

I use williams WGRS sight in the rear dovetail with a peep on a Win 94 Wrangler. It works well and is affordable. I think I'm going to spring the money for a one ragged whole sight . I think it's a little more rugged. Also check out Skinners sights.

I use a Mojo barrel-mounted aperture sight on my Mauser and I like it a lot... a couple of years ago I tried a ORH sight on another rifle and found that it blocked too much of the sight picture.

If I pop the insert out of the Mojo it recedes to a thin circle which is sufficient to let me center the front pyramid yet unobtrusive enough to allow both both-eyes-open, full FOV shooting.

YMMV.....

I use these - but make an aperature sight out of it - follow along after each photo.

Buy this for $30

Call Tru Glo at (972) 774-0300. Tell them you need just the peep aperature for this (cost $8) -

Put the aperature on the sight base and your good to go for around $45(tax or shipping)!

The rear sight locks into any 3/8" dovetail.

Thanks Levergunner,

Will that sight system maintain hunting accuracy to 200 yards?

I've got the rifles that bear this sight set at 2" high at 100 yards and the trajectory will make them useable at 200 yds. If you use the tip of the bead = point of impact it will work out to 200 yds. If you use the bead covers point of impact, the bead will be too big for a deer at 200 yds.

Williams makes a rear peep like Tru Glo also.

I'd avoid the Marbles Bullseye. I tried one on my 94AE and found it lacking. When you focus on the front sight the rear sight becomes invisible and it's hard to center the sights up. I thought it would be good and offer great visibility compared to the other barrel peeps but it sucked. IMO of coarse.

An aperture sight is used differently than an open rear barrel sight. One must simply look through the aperture, and focus on the front sight and target. It is not necessary to be able to distinctly see the outline of the aperture sight, and one need not attempt to “centre” the front bead in the aperture—this occurs naturally. Consider, for example, the tang-mounted aperture sights: it is generally impossible for the eye to focus upon so close an object, yet a good tang sight with a fine aperture makes for the most accurate sighting method, short of a telescopic sight.

I use a Skinner Barrel Mounted Adjustable Peep Sight—

—on a .22RF Baby Rolling Block, in conjunction with a Lyman #17 Globe Front Sight (with the bead insert installed):

I find the combination fast and accurate, and the sights actually complement each other in appearance.

The new Marbles Bullseye—

—seems perfectly sound in principle, and I plan to try one soon (on a different rifle). It is similar to some sights made in the 19th century.
