The first name to my mind was J. Edgar Hoover. But that's a WAG for sure.

While he does look a lot like hoover, I dont think it is him. Hoover dressed immanculate, and wouldnt let his suit or hat get rumpled up like that. Who is he? Al capone had a brother that was a FBI agent! Did any of you ever hear that?

Are you sure about that Bill?

I thought he was a sheriff or city marshall in Kansas.

Don't know if that's a pic of Hoover.

Say what you will, he was never involved in any of that D.C. scandal or Tiger W. kinda stuff.

He came off looking real well in Watergate because he had the cojones to tell Nixon he wouldn't let the FBI be part of the cover-up.

That does it. I said a while back Jason Alexander (George from Seinfeld) could play Bat, and I didn't know what Bat really looked like. Now I'm convinced.

Nope, ... it'll always be Gene Barry (and I don't care that he doesn't really look like him. But Jason Alexander as a suave ladies' man and gambler?!? C'mon now! Besides, he's way too short!)

....and died at his desk in the newsroom, while writing what was to be his next column.

Great photo rangerider. I'd seen the other "later years" photo of Bat, which all good Wild West afficionados should know. When you look at the much more famous photo of a young Bat (with derby hat) and then view this one, it is obvious that Bat had aged close to four decades since his more famous photo.

I believe that Bat enjoyed pocketing money from fools, gullible enough to believe that Bat would sell a stranger his "personal" sixgun "from the old days" for good cash money. I say, good for him. Bat was one of the good ones. - DixieBoy

I have to say that those later life photos just don't do anything for my concept of the wild west Bat Masterson. When I get old, the last place I want to be is in a city dressed in a suit. The wilderness has been calling to me all my life and when I retire maybe I can finally move there for my final days and just plain enjoy working and living in God's creation 24-7.

Ole' Bat started out on the buffalo range. I figure he was a skinner since I have no information that he ever was a buffalo hunter. He was one of the defenders at Adobe Walls. Later was a lawman, in Kansas, I think. Don't know how he managed to wind up in New York City, but he was a writer for a newspaper there. Some time in later life, J. Wright Mooar, the famous buffalo hunter paid him a visit in New York. The two remembered each other. Must have been a nice reunion.

I aways look at it that everybody gets old. What they did as a young man was the grit. Later it is living in the glory of your past excitement and not looking back. It was what you did and that was a different time. I would do it all over again the same way. :D
