The last set of tires on my older Yamaha were Avon Roadriders. I liked them just fine.

Have 880's on my Valkyrie, but my next set of tires ,bound for my Goldwing (unless I sell it) will be a set of Avons.

I love Metzlers. I have mounted them on several bikes and was very happy.

I run Avons on my old 98 Wide Glide for a while, probably wore out a couple of sets or tires or better, but I eventually went back to Dunlops. The Avons were cheaper in price, and I think they held better on the road, but they also wore out quicker, and I got some funny wear patterns on my 21 inch front tires.

My indenpendent usually carries Dunlops so that what I went back to, and I even run a touring rear tire on my old Wide Glide, because I am after longer wear, however, I feel I am giving up some traction and handling, but it's my choice and for a while there, I was just getting tired of putting all of money into tire changes.

Hi Blaine, I'm afraid I don't have much to offer about the Avon tires. The Metzler ME880 is the benchmark for a touring tire offering very long life on Harley baggers and Gold Wings. I can tell you that the 880 is a very heavy tire compared to sport touring tires, probably because of the extra thick carcass. The difference was 5 lbs or so according to a friend of mine. I tried the Metzler Z6 sport touring tires but was a little dissappointed. Adhesion was great but durability of the rear tire was only slightly better than the stock Dunlop. The front Z6 has held up significantly longer than the stock Dunlop. Avon tires come in some more unsual sizes for cruisers and seem to be the factory tire of choice for Big Bear Choppers, Big Dog and even some of the CVO Harley's I think. I just went to Motorcycle Superstore which has consumer reviews of tires that have helped me in the past, but they apparently don't carry Avon tires. Sorry, not much help. There must be some reviews online somewhere.

Thunder50: glad to hear I'm not the only one here with a Valk.

Can't speak for Metzlers from firsthand experience. Seem to recall that back when I hung out at the VOA site, there was one guy in particular that bragged about them constantly. IIRC, the main thing that's kept me from trying them was the price.

Didn't have bad luck running with Dunlap Elite 3 but wanted to try different stuff after reading this and that guy's opinions. Currently running Avon Venom R up front and something Dark Side on the rear. Might go back to E3 on both ends for purposes of comparison once the Avon wears out, we'll see...

I've run Continental, Avon, and Dunlop. Also a few off brands sold at the local Farm and Fleet. I think I get the best bang for my buck with Dunlop.
