He's got a lot of ammo, and no one poses on a mangy Spanish Barb on purpose. I'd say your initial assessment is probably correct. What is that rifle, a Mauser? Perhaps 7X57?

He looks a lot like a Mexican guy I worked for in Phoenix some years ago.

Mauser Modelo 93 carbine in 7x57 more than likely.

Right off-hand I'd say he was probably one of Pancho Villa's followers.

I don't think he'd be much fun to face in a fight. he looks like he might know which end of that rifle the bullet exits.

What is he holding? A canteen? Whenever I see photos like this I wonder if my wife's Grandfather knew the person, or if he is in the background somewhere. He rode with PV as a young man, supposedly. He is gone and the family member that knows the truth won't talk. Kevin

You cant tell for sure about looks. This morning I was watching a movie made in 1949 with audie murphy. That is about 4 years after his war actions. I swear he looked like a small 14 year old boy! He was born in 1925 so was 24 years old!

Yeah, looks to be a Mauser cavalry carbine.

Mexico had a lot of '93s. He seems to be a believer in carrying enough ammo (I fall into that camp as well).

A little trivila. When I was a boy in the late 40s my folks was close friends with a older couple. His name was ray smith. He was in black jack pershings campaign chasing villa in mexico. He told me some interesting storys about it. Of course they never caught poncho but he claimed they had a indian scout who claimed he found poncho and some of his men sleeping in a cave. Suposedly, the scout sneaked in the cave and stold poncho,s rifle to prove he was there. Ray was a interesting man. He told me storys of him and several friends on a year long hunting trip in the colorado rockys and not seeing a road for the year! I dont know if that was before or after his being in the army. I remember him showing me a few guns. One was a 45-70 springfield. I would guess he looked in his late 60s or early 70s back in 1949-50.
I remember him telling me he was infantry and about marching in that hot country and he said "We took our boots and socks off, and the hide would peel off right with the socks!
I also once worked with a mexican who said his father was a well educated young mexican, poncho captured him and made him his accountant or paymaster. Back in about 1965 I knew another old mexican who claimed he also was captured as a boy and made to solider for poncho.

His saddle bags are kinda full and bulging too. Wonder if they're filled with corn dodgers or more ammo?

The saddle horn is in his left hand. Mexican saddles are known for large saddle horns and adorments.

Aren't most horses taller (at the head) than their riders? I think that guy's tall than his horse. The poor thing has to spread out his front legs just to hold that guy up. Even the saddle looks uncomfortably small for him.

Kind of reminds me of the movie "Evil Roy Slade" when Evil Roy stole that horse from a midget.

From the condition of his horse, his attire, his rifle and the amount of ammunition he has I think he is an optimist. I like it - great pic!

Don't reckon I would put any money on it, but I'm thinking that little mexican cow pony is just as tough as the man he is carrying. I would put him up for endurance against todays horses. Let's see what danny has to say.

If not a 93 its darn sure a model 95 in 7mm. The ole pony reminds of some i saw down in Chile, they could go 2 days straight up and down with a semi walk/trot pace , they where mangy and mean

My uncle told a story of being pinned down on a ridge in Italy by some very serious Germans. After 3 days they were running out of ammo. He said from that day forward an infantry man should never run out of two things, ammo and prayer.

Another Uncle fighting with Patton's eighth was walking down a street in Europe and an SS Sargeant stepped out of an ally and put a Luger on his heart and pulled the trigger, it misfired. He dropped the SS scum with his 1911. He always nagged that your gun should be shiny clean and ammo polished every night in hunting camp. The Luger was dirty.

Not only is he carrying lots of ammo. its shiny clean and nothing else is. I suspect he is a survivor of mortal combat.

Interesting he has his ammo for the mauser belted through loops and not in the more familiar and faster to use 5 round clips.

Maybe he has lower back problems and the stiffness of the bullet cases acts like a macho corset!

Sure is a lot of ammo for one hombre to carry.

I think some guy was walking around the neighborhood with a camera and a pony and this guys Mother just couldn't resist getting his picture taken. Cute little guy isn't he?

The reason he looks so angry is because he wanted to go fishing with the rest of the guys instead of posing for this stupid picture.
