What are [B ot]s?

Post by markinalpine »

If you look at the "Who is on line" box at the bottom the page, it lists the user names of people who are on-line. I've noticed Google[Bot], or MSM[Bot] at times, maybe others. Just what are these things and what are they up to?

They are only here to keep track of you...

I believe they are necessary to allow the Google search machine to find us.

There are some forums that show what sections individual members are in at any given moment. What annoys the heck out of me is when I see these stinking Bots in the profile section. They have NO BUSINESS there.

I have also had them hang up my computer at times when trying to get on other forums. It seems the forum pages couldn't load until the Bot was finished with what ever it was doing.

I also vote they be banned and blocked.

BAD Hobie

The Google and Yahoo Bots don't bother me....What you should be worried about are the DNC, Brady, FBI and CIA bots, who legally don't have to announce their presence, that keep track of thread subject Hot Words, then copy them verbatem..

Bots are necessary to the internet. They are the way that information is gathered. There is nothing bad about the ones you see as listed on a site.If there weren't bots then there would be no fresh information.Just cause you don't understand something is no reason to advocate it's banning.

The bots won't bother you at all if you fit you tin foil hat down to t he top of your ears before you log on to the forum.

Stan is right.. without bots you wouldn't be able to find anything on the internet... if a person does a search for leverguns and end up on this site, it is because of bots pointing them in our direction. NO need at all to get worried about it.

As I write this post, the status is:
Who is online
Users browsing this forum: Google [Bot], markinalpine, MSN [Bot] and 14 guests

YIKES, I'm surrounded!
I appreciate the attempts at humor, and I appreciate being told don't worry about them, but I have to ask again, "What are they?" Do Google, MSN, and the others join this forum as members?

Anything you can find on Google or Yahoo search first has to be found by one of their bots..... No Bots, No Google  I didn't know that a few months ago, either.

markinalpine,

The bots are not members. They are infiltrators. They sneak in through the cracks of the internet like cockroaches and other vermin.

They ar ebigger than me, wave their arms around shouting stuff like "Danger, danger" and generally help the well known benign "Google" to find posts nobody using the forum search engine can find.

Mark, no they don't.. Read the following explanation from google itself how it works... despite what some ill informed people believe, they are very useful!

It was a Yahoo search on loads for the .45-120 that led me here. A neccessary evil I guess!
