The twin tailed devil. Sure enough a hotrod. And, if I remember correctly, the leading ace from WWII flew the P-38. Not to mention it was used to shoot down Yamamoto's plane.

The "38" is just flat out plain sexy. My favorite of all time.

IIRC "Yippee!" was the 5000th P38 built. To commemorate the event it was painted red with white lettering.

Yep, just found a good pic:

Egad!

Is it just me, or is the right tail longer than the left?

EDIT Oops, I'm looking at the underside. Is the LEFT tail longer than the RIGHT?

Optical illusion from the angle of the shot and the shadows. As I recall the original pic shows the a/c moving left to right and banking right to show off the paint scheme. It's not a true planform shot but the way this pic has been rotated makes it look like an odd shot.

My father (a B-17/25/29/A-20 instructor pilot) had a good flying bud who flew 38s over North Africa...then F-86s in Korea...then electronic sureveillance (SAM sites) getting shot at by small arms fire and rockets in unarmed C-47s over the DMZ and North Vietnam. Think he liked the 38s and 86s better :)

My favourite warbird!

Huge range, lots of centrally located guns, could out fly the ME109s after the Fowler flap as added. Bad press due to bad gas as far as it is known. Was pulled from European theater due to engine failures caused likely bad that same bad gas.
Lindy went to the Pacific to teach some of the pilots on how to increase their range and was even involved in an enemy shootdown.
Yes, the highest US ace was Richard Bong and next is Tommy McGuire both flying P38s.

The Hurricane did all the work and the Spitfire got all the press.

Just like the Spitfire, the Mustang got the good press, but this was after the fuel problem was taken care of. To extend the range of the P51s you had to pack the fuel everywhere and on takeoff the added on auxiliary tank behind the pilot had to be burned off first, as the CG was pushed too far back to let off of the stick. Pilots complained about hand and arm cramps from holding the stick forward to keep the nose down for the first hour of flight.
