GUN BOOKS

Post by getitdone1 »

Been around a lot of guns and gun books over the past 50 years and thought a list of gun books would be especially helpful to those here who are rather new to guns--even to those of us with more experience. I welcome everyone's input here. Lots of great gun books I've never heard about.

Shooters Bible--gun pictures and lists about all modern guns and replicas, ballistic charts, etc.
Gun Digest--gun pictures and lists about all modern guns and replicas.
Gun Trader's Guide--prices can be "dated" but a must especially if you like the older guns.
Blue Book Of Gun Values--believe that titles correct. Probably the major source for present-day gun values.
Cartridges Of The World--as title says with pictures and ballistics, loading data. A "must have" in my opinion. Outstanding.
Brownell's catalog of gun parts and gunsmith supplies.

Firearms Assembly-Dissassembly by J.B. Wood--shows you how to take'em apart and put-em back together. A separate book for center-fire
rifles, pistols, rim-fire rifles and maybe shotguns but not sure.

Then there's the great books buy the great gun writers:

Jack O'Connor
Elmer Keith
Warren Page
Townsend Whelen
Jim Carmichael
George Nonte
Charles Askins
Craig Boddington
Peter Capstick
etc.

The books listing current gun values are often not so current even though professionaliy done. So be careful with these when using them to buy used guns! They are very useful but double check with the current true market value. Values can also vary in different locations.

What gun books do some of you especially like?

Don

"American Rifle- A Biography".............Amazing read. Discusses the rifle in America from the revolution to now and how it affected machine tool industry, government and world order. Be warned, once you start reading it you can't put it down!

pwl44m,

No pics in Blue Book. No longer have that book but am sure you're right. Do recall a few nice pictures in the front helping to explain gun condition ratings. I'll delete the picture part.

The JB Wood series is great. I think that there are 5 volumes in the series; Centerfire Rifle, Semi Auto Pistol, Revolver, Rimfire Rifle and Shotgun. There are at least two editions of these with a few firearms either added or deleted.

I've used all five of mine to help disassemble (and more importantly RE-assemble) several firearms.

Hatcher's Notebook - anything written by Hatcher for that matter...

Whelen's bio published after his death Mr Rifleman is also very good.

Another one not often mentioned is McBride's A Rifleman Went to War - lots of good 1st person stories regarding WW1 and weaponry.

If you like combat weaponry comparisons from participants who experienced them, two other books that might interest you are Shots Fired in Anger by John George and Ordnance Went Up Front by Roy Dunlop.
