OT: This question was asked of me in a private email.

“Can moderators or forum owners see and read private messages between forum members?”

This is a good question, often wondered this myself.

But then I didn’t know this type of activity was going on either.

“I think I should let you guys know that I've been asked to discipline posters here about comments made about MO. In fairness, that is not the only such request I've had although those were from purported members of other forums.”

I had Admin rights in a forum once, and could not view such thing.....and would not even if I could have. I generally say what I have to say in public. (Much to Hobie's displeasure at times  )

Not that I know of. I imagine there is some way to do it, but I don't know that method. I don't know PWs either.

Well, I can now say with some certainty that I would not ever consider visiting the MO forum. That someone would want to reach out beyond their own forum and admonish or discipline members of some other forum for mentioning MO is .... let me think ... desperate. I take it the atmosphere over there is somewhat hostile to open discussion. At least that's what I now conclude from this thread.

Why just MO? Let's be fair and include Larry, and Curly too.

I am part owner and admin level on a forum and I cannot read private messages.

It's possible the software doesn't have a provision or it isn't readily known how, but unless the PMs are encrypted, the are readible. It would take a whiz kid about 3 seconds to do it.

It's not that I think the admins are reading that stuff. It's just that I know how to do it..... it's probable that they, like emails, are plain text.

just sayin'

Being a computer programer I have to warn you that what admins can see is up to the programers who wrote the forum software! As in even if the software used by www.levergunscommunity.com won't let admins read private messages other forum software might. Second warning it is almost always possible to do so with a little research the question is just how much research. I suspect that in most forum programs it is only a matter of a few hours research for a programer.

I live in MO and cuss it on a regular basis.
