Chiappa 1886 .45-70

Hey guys. Just shot my new 86. It is gonna be a good gun. I was hitting pieces of clay pigeons at 75 yards. The sights are terrible. I am looking at the marble semi buckhorn rear with the brass/gold front. They have tons of measurements to choose from. Which do I need? Are the rear not elevation adjustable? Under the item is exactly the same as the originals. I am also looking for a tang sight. What do you guys think about the Lyman #2 sight as opposed to the marble?

The Lyman is a good sight if you don't mink drifting the front for windage. The Marbles has the windage adjustment in the base. Also I prefer a post front sight. Much more precise than a bead. Mine is an old Redfield Sourdough.

I bought a Chiappa 1886 a few months back and it wouldn't feed any factory ammo I tried to feed it,it jammed from day one,took it back to where I bought it, he sent it to Chiappa in Ohio they had it for 3 months. I called them 6 times before someone answered the phone and they said they had to wait for parts from Italy, another month went by, so by the 4th. month I was so PO"ed I called the shop where I bought it from and they said it was out of there hands because I called Chiappa to find out the status of my gun.... What The ****
Chiappa's customer service is joke,why wouldn't a Distributor/Repair facility for Chiappa in Ohio stock parts for there firearms?
Also I will never set foot in the gun shop I bought it from.
Finally got my money back and bought this one in the picture a Browning 1886

Chiappa had originally said the rifle and carbine 1886's would be available in 45-70 AND 444 . After looking at their website just now there's no mention of the 444 anylonger . So my own personal intrest in them is no longer there

I have only shot reloads with it and it was hanging up alittle. But it was worse when I was working the lever slowly to take out the brass without ejecting. But when I would cycle it fast it worked fine. I was also using untrimmed Remington brass with 405 gr rnfp bullets from Oregon trail. So a shorter length might help.

Haha i don't know why I want new sights. But my dad had a marlin cowboy that had semibuckhorn with a brass front. And I loved them. But I seriously want a tang. What should I get?

I have heard so many bad reports on their products that I wont even consider them. Rather get an old beat-up Winchester, spend the money on getting it serviceable. It usually dont take too much either after a good strip and clean providing the barrel is in reasonable condition.

I can't help you out on the tang sight as I prefer a receiver sight myself. But don't let these guys get you down, it sounds like you got a good rifle and it's accurate, have fun with it and add what ever you want to it.

Don, those "Japchesters" are known high quality units. No comparison to the Chiappa.

I wish Chiappa would get their quality control under...uh, CONTROL because they sure make some dandly looking rifles. I've got an 1892 in .45 Colt that I got before I knew much about them and I'm fortunate in that it's just fine - works well and looks just great. That said, I've read complaint after complaint and that's no way to run a business.

Chaparral (or whomever makes their stuff) seems to be even worse!

haha, I know it would have been a better investment to get a real Winchester, but I would rather shoot it and not have to cry every time I shot it out of worry that it may have lost some of its worth. Here, as promised, are the pictures of it, although it is a little late. I have also heard complaints about Chiappa, but I have a Cimmaron 92 that is accurate, perfect functioning and the action is slicker than snot, hopefully this is what I will say about the 86 in a year. Enjoy!!

Redrider, Chiappa and Uberti, read Cimarron, are two totally different companies. Uberti has a fairly good track record. Chiappa, not.

Just to clarify, Cimarron's 1892 copy is made by Chiappa, not Uberti. I recently picked up a Chiappa '92 from Taylor's and, like RedRider's, it is slick as snot, and beautifully finished. Mine is a 44-40, and the bore slugs out to a true .427.

Yup, Cimarron's 92s are build by Chiappa. Here is mine in .45 Colt.

Yes, let's not mix (and miss) this stuff up too much. Taylor's and Cimarron (and a smattering of others) provide firearms from both Chiappa and Uberti. All their 92s, as mentioned, are Chiappa, as are the 1886s. Legacy (LSI) confusingly markets the latter as a "Puma" along with it's Chiappa-made 1892s, also called "Puma" as a carry-over from its old Rossi days.

Yep, I wouldn't go near Chiappa or Taylors. I've tried getting parts for their rifles with no luck. Neither Taylors nor Chiappa seem to care. I've even spoke to both of them on the phone, bottom line they just don't care. Just think what their businesses could do if either one had a real service oriented company
