Deer Hunting Outfit Question…

Just out of curiosity, how many of you are old school traditionalist and still wear
Filson or Woolrich wool hunting outfits? They just seem to go hand in hand with
an old lever gun.

Mine were stolen along with my car and a 71-348 carbine. It's an extremely warm outfit. When i hit the lottery, i'm gonna get a new set.

I wear a LL Bean union suit under wool britches and a flannel shirt. Then I put on a sweater and a LL Bean wool jacket. No Stormy Kromer, my girlfriend made me a hat with flannel in it. It isn't very windy up here so that isn't much of a problem. I like the wool because it is quiet and comfortable. With this combo I've hunted down to -10F and stayed warm. I also put on an orange vest as required by law here. Nothing beats wool.

When it gets cold I wool up pants, shirt & overshirt top it off with a carhartt saddle jacket plus chaps and snowpaks been in the saddle -20 was chasing elk in -4 a couple days ago. you cant beat wool. danny

Gotta wear orange here. Those black/red outfits were man killers . In dim light, you looked just like an upright bear. Guy shot & killed his brother here this week. Bro wasn't wearing orange on opening day.

Just happens... my hunting gear is laid out here in the family room ready for me to take off in the morning. The combination of the Pendleton wool coat and the down vest is great. Wear it all in the morning when it is cold and when (if) the day moderates you take off the vest and stuff it in the game pocket and you are good for the rest of the day.

Mix. It depends how cold. I don't have a camo jacket that's very warm, but I do have warm camo pants. My warm coat is Filson shelter cloth.

Wool long handles. Icebreaker brand.

I wanted a Filson red and black plaid coat for awhile . And eventually went in a more pricey outdoor store in Fredricksburg VA maybe 10 years ago and they had some . So I tried one on !

That stuff while nice and all that is just to heavy (actual weight wise) .

I think the weight of the Filson coat equals that of the camo shirt and pants I use PLUS the insulated coat and bibs I wear over the shirt and pants .

It didn`t help me any, still have my tag in my pocket.

Mackinaw bibs, and vest, in grey/black for late season archery. bibs are lined. Keeps me warm all day. I don't own a coat though

I've always worn what I had around. I've looked at getting a Filson double Mackinaw and some wool pants, but they're spendy and just haven't done it.

Danang in '68. Bunch of us boys made a group buy. Must have been a good 'un 'cause I haven't needed any other hunting knife since then. The "good deals" in reel-to-reel tape decks, fancy cameras, etc. did not last nearly as long or give near the service.

The wool coat is in there with the knife for usefulness and value. Mine isn't real heavy so you have to have a vest on a cold morning. But being able to take off the vest and stuff it in the back game pocket, where it nestles in with your lunch, water, flashlight, etc. and doesn't require a backpack has been a much-appreciated feature. Here it is about 12:30 today when I started sweating with the vest on. Took it off, stuffed it in the game pocket, and not much sweating after that! No elk either, but can't blame that on the coat, knife, or rifle. The critters just weren't there today, but we'd have took care of 'em if they were!

I still wear a Pendleton red and black plaid that my mom gave me in 1972 for my birthday. It is always warm, no matter how wet it gets here. That Pendleton wool is really durable. Add to that an orange vest to satisfy the law and I'm good to go.

I still use my filson red black coat. love it, just throw a hunter orange vest over it just to be safe.
There is a company called Stormy Kromer that makes real nice Jackets too check them out on the Web.

The pants were my father's and I bought the coat just before Woolrich started importing there clothing.



My next purchase will be from Filson.. but you have to pick through what they import and what is still made in the states.

I don’t hunt anymore.

But growing up back in New York, it seemed like everyone wore Woolrich red and black jacket and trousers. A few, like my father and his buddies, Vinny Schweitzer and Ole Ferronna, even had the matching Woolrich wool hat. I only had the Woolrich hunting jacket that later was passed on to a relative. No matter how hard the wind blew or how low the thermometer dropped, I never was cold when wearing the Woolrich jacket: a huge collar that turned up almost over the ears and hand warmer pockets on the sides.

I’ve been sitting here and thinking. Hard to believe that was all back in 1963. Walk into the North Branch Inn (No. Branch, NY) and Woolrich red and black lined the bar, the air filled with cigarette, pipe, and cigar smoke, laughter, and tales of the day’s hunt and those of previous years. Thanksgiving week was the big week to go afield. My grandparents’ farmhouses were filled with relatives coming home for the holiday and the hunt. It was a great time to grow up....

Regarding the clothing - i hunt on a private lease usually, but still wear a bit of blaze orange - yesterday a solid blaze coat with fairly heavy insulation --I wear stuff like 5.11 gear for my job so i just wore some 5.11 navy blue bdu's that i washed in scent free soap.
I could get away with going full camo or a buffalo plaid mackinaw, but i'm leery of some goofball with a 7 or 300 mag taking a potshot at me from a section away or something while im walking back to my truck. thats the same reason i dont wear brown either
I've heard too many campfire stories of doofus's taking long range shots because they think a 7mm Mag is a laser beam

I would love to have on of those coats for just wearing around in general though

I supose if I ever wear out all the wool coats I have ( and stop finding them cheap in the 2nd hand stores ) I'd have to try some of that fancy camo stuff

Till then it's the red and black coats , wool pants , wood and blued steel for me
