Got me an 1886 Winchester Take-Down!

Post by rbertalotto »

Always wanted to add one of these to the collection.

On the way back from dropping my son and family off at the airport, I stopped at a gun shop I haven't visited in over a year.

There on the wall was a modern (Japan), unfired 1886, 45-70, Take-Down....Box, papers. etc....on consignment. The PO had a gunsmith remove the tang safety and install a tang sight. He then put it in the safe and never fired it.

The asking price was fair, but I asked them if they would present the owner an offer. I offered $300 below the asking price and the owner accepted!

This is a picture that I found on the internet as I haven't had time to photograph the actual rifle............and I know how upset we get when we post "New Rifles" without pictures....

I'll take pictures tomorrow and change it..........

Very nice. Your next step will be to install a Browning hammer and trigger to get rid of the multi-piece Winchester trigger and rebounder..

I already modified the hammer finger so there is no more rebound. But as you know, there is only a hint of a half cock safety now.

With a bit of polishing and relieving the trigger return spring, I got the trigger down to 3.5 pounds. On half cock with 10 pounds of pull the hammer will fall. But since it is so close to the firing pin there is much less energy.

Using primed cases, I tested it and they went off 50% of the time from half cock. Not good!

It appears I could grind a slot into the face of the trigger sear to have it engage the hammer sear properly. I might try this.

I contacted Midwest Gun Works and they have the Browning hammer and trigger in stock for $110...........

If I can't get the existing parts to be fail safe, I'll go this route.

Good going! That's a great rifle. :D

I really like mine, with the exception that I wish it were checkered wood. They made a few Deluxe Grade with fancy wood and checkering a few years back, but cost was $1,900!

If you want to buy a buttstock and forend from "Winchester", be prepared to pay heavily.
5 * U34868501 BUTTSTOCK GR I PISTOL GRIP $390.50
5 * U3486E8504 BUTTSTOCK HIGH GRADE EXTRA LIGHT $502.00
5 * U34868502 BUTTSTOCK HIGH GRADE PISTOL GRIP $498.25
5 * U3486T501 BUTTSTOCK TAKEDOWN $396.7
24 * U3486E1702 FOREARM EXTRA LIGHT GRADE I $143.50
24 * U3486E1703 FOREARM EXTRA LIGHT HIGH GRADE $205.50
24 * U34861500 FOREARM PISTOL GRIP GRADE I $143.25
24 * U34867015 FOREARM PISTOL GRIP HIGH GRADE $143.25

I got extra wood for far less fro Western Gun Parts, Ltd. They are located in Edmonton, Alberta,
Canada and they will sell you parts that "Winchester" will not.

That's cool. I really like my Winoku. It isn't a takedown, but it's a real nice piece. I picked up a hammer and trigger from a fellow levergunner and replaced the rebounding parts. It appears to be good to go, but I haven't had time to get to the range with it yet.

Can someone point me to the link detailing getting rid of the rebounding hammer etc. I need to get that going on my 1886. It has been sitting in the safe for a couple years but I am thinking about using it next year in Montana.

Thanks
