AE .357Mag 158gr JSP + 1894C = 1800fps
Due to some reading and other discusssions, I was beginning to doubt that my .357Mag carbine was doing what I thought it was doing.
My guess was that it was putting the factory AE 158gr JSP out at 1800fps and I said so, then someone, somewhere, implied that it probably wasn't true.
I had to know. Broke out the chronograph and verified.
Marlin 1894C, 18.5" barrel, 5-rounds average = 1806fps.
I knew I wasn't makin' it up.
I feel better now.

With some powders (H110/W296 and Lil'Gun) one can get 2000 fps with the 158s, 1800 or so with the 180s. Normal pressures (for the .357 Mag), too. It is a good cartridge in the rifle.

That's right! My loading was intended for a capable handgun, but in the rifle it moves the 158gr JFP @ 1736 average in my 16" bbl M94.

I've got Zero brand 158grn JSP bullet loads at 'warm 357mag' levels doing 1,822fps and 'hot 357mag' levels doing 1,977fps out of my 24" Rossi. According to Nate, the Rossi's action is plenty strong enough for hot loads, however, I didn't ask about either Marlin's or Winchester's action strength.

The problem with LilGun is it burns so hot. I'm hesitant to use it for fear of throat erosion.O.S.O.K. wrote:Ah beat me to it. Well, I only use it for Uberpoundenthumpen hunting loads, so throat erosion shouldn't be a big deal.COSteve wrote:The problem with LilGun is it burns so hot. My GP powder is 2400. Plenty fast enough under a 158 Keith HP or stack of 75gr collar buttons.

Exactly what are the flame temperatures of Lil'Gun, H110, and 296?
I suspect only the manufacturer knows for sure. Hodgdon says 296 and H110 are both the same, purchased from the same manufacturer, and packaged separately. I don't know who makes Lil'Gun.
Whether or not Lil'Gun causes more erosion there is still the question of why. Flame temperaturte or something else. There is also the question of why certain models of guns seem to be more likely to be affected? Design? Materials? Owners. The latter is related to why certain models of cars seem to have more problems and be involved in more accidents than other kinds of cars. All owners do not practice the same style shooting/driving and some drivers with certain personality characteristics seem to be especially attracted to certain sporty models. Some drivers are more likely to press the pedal to the metal and operate closer to the redline. Same with guns. Now I know it isn't hard to fire any revolver fast enough to make it too hot to hold and I know the hotter the load the sooner that will occur but I would never blame the gun.
