woods walking gun

Post by stinkycat »

Have been wanting something bigger than a 22 but not as loud or heavy as my 357's. This was a heavy barrel gun, swapped barrels, took endshake out of the cylinder trued the barrel, set b/c gap at 3 thousands. Grip are made from g-10 micarta, target hammer, ran it through the glass beads and parkerized it. At 31 oz carries well, 158 lswc will do anything I need much easier on the ears! Image

Good to see there are still people who realize they do not need the latest squashemflat magnum for a lazy walk in the country.

A Ruger Blackhawk .45 with the .45ACP cylinder in place isn't real loud, feels good in the hand, and is plenty accurate, and I have one, so that is my choice for a woods gun when I want something larger than rimfire. The .45ACP isn't a magnum round by any stretch of the imagination, but neither is a .38, and both are plenty of gun for most things. I am not sure I want to use them on a bear, but I have never seen a bear up close. I don't have a double action revolver other than my Super Red Hawk in .480, so I need to get something which is a moderate sized and will shoot .38 Special.

To my eye that style of grip and barrel profile is the prettiest revolver made. I applaud your taste and attention to detail on the fit and tuning.

Nice! Well done. Now it needs a nice leather holster :) Check out my thread showing the El Paso Saddlery thumb break that I got for my M10.

Nice. I know this is Leverguns but my true passion is revolvers. That more have been seen here lately is good with me. I think there is plenty of room for both, that they go good together, like coffee and donuts. Thanks for the post. Keep them coming.

Looks a lot like my Victory Model. Very cool.

I like to pack my Grandpa's Official Police .38 spl quite a bit.

I've gone through thousands of .38 Specials since I was a kid. Will always be one
Of my favorites.

Way cool!

Have you bought a .44spl yet to carry at the mine? Maybe a good .38spl with the old 158 grain LHPSWC bullet would do ain't that the old FBI load?

Very nice!

I have a model 15-4 and it has seen many miles of woods walking.

stinkycat: I really like your choice in handgun, finish, grips, and caliber (S&W Model 10). I used to own an old one that was released from NYPD (heavy barrel), it was banged up some, had some history, and it was my first woods gun too (other than my Ruger MKII). Unfortunately, I wasn't bright enough to keep it, had to move on to the big-boomers. Now I carry my BUG as my woods gun--Glock 27--not as nice as your S&W, but somewhat practical if not sentimental...thank you for posting... :)

Very pretty. Where I do most of my woods wallimg these days I can't carry a handgun other than a C&B so I've kind of shifted to my 1858 with either the C&B or .45acp cylinder for that job.

Nicely done. I favor a S&W 1917 when I take a double action revolver out. Nothing in my neck of the woods a .45 acp won't deal with.

I have about two dozzen more exspendsive and powerfull guns than my s&w m&p. Yet this gun gets carried more than the rest. Thats because it will do the job and I dont mind getting it dusty rideing the trails on my atv.

Would love to have a set of stag grips like that for mine, but they would cost more than the gun did!

I am a fairly old (71 in a few weeks) and got most my stuff in the 1960 to 1985 time frame when guns and stag grips werent a fraction of now. Here is the runner up carry-wise. Its a old s&w 38-44 heavy duty that I found a .44 special barrel for. Had the clyinder reamed to .44 special and the barrel swapped, not even reblued. Probley have no more than $275 bucks in it counting everything. Of course I did that close to 25-30 years ago. I carry it a lot so I dont scratch up my other 6 .44 specials. No fooling!

Yep, 71 is gettin younger every day.

I picked up a pair of Ajax simu stag grips for my 1917. Tried them, but they just didn't feel right. I stuck some pachmayes on and found them much better.
