Project 73
Just received this back from Classic Guns in IL, where it was case-colored. One of the few times I've had something re-finished that it came back looking exactly the way I hoped it would. This started out as a rusty but complete(except for the dust cover) action, with a fair amount of pitting. Lots of hand sanding and a little bit of engraving later, and it was ready to refinish. Now just have to decide between 44-40 and 38-40, find a barrel, some wood, and a dust cover, then wait until I can afford to finish it.

My O my, that is really some outstanding work! The rusty old 1873 I'm working on is just gonna have to keep the rustic look, but I'd love to be able to make it look like that.

Very Nice. If you're looking for simply straight-grained walnut, nothing fancy, give Precision Gun Works a look. Otherwise, there's quite a few other options. Who did the engraving?

Re: Project 73
Beautiful! I've got to ask, did you engrave it or have someone do it?
ETA: Now that I know that you did the engraving yourself, there's only one word for it . . . STUNNING!
I'm amazed at the craftsmanship exhibited by many of the members here. I'd love to be able to do just a fraction of the things I've seen here.

Re: Project 73
Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the kind words. I did the engraving and the polishing. Glad you like it so far. Found a piece of exhibition grade walnut that should look real nice on it. Pick it up next Saturday. Still need a barrel and I think I've decided on a 44-40.
Thanks again,
Hoosierdaddy

Now that's going to go straight to the top of the rack. I love the engraving. Not too busy, but it fills in nicely. Great job. You do that as a sideline? Might have some work lined up for ya. As well as a number of other guys here.

Mescalero, the link locked up my computer too. I tried the same as you but finally got it to shut down.
It is some real fine work on that 73.

Re: Project 73
Very nice work.
Mike Hunter, of Hunter Restorations can make you a barrel. It will have the correct markings and look original. He made me a 38-55 barrel for an early 94 from a 375 H&H barrel that I supplied. Nice tight groove diameter, good steel. Should be easy to get bullets that fit and shoot well.

Re: Project 73
Thanks again for all the nice comments. I engrave full time, mostly jewelry, but really enjoy engraving guns. My FFL holder retired, so I can't take in any modern gun work until I get an FFL or find one to rent me a space to work. Can still engrave non-serial # parts, though(side plates, cylinders, barrels, etc), and pre-1898 firearms. My email address is (kbur3 at embarqmail dot com) if I can answer any questions for you. Here's a set of side plates for a Uberti 73.
Thanks,

Re: Project 73
Well dang, Hoosier. I wish I'd of known that before I made arrangements with someone else to engrave my Colt SAA. I'll definitely keep it in mind for the future though. Dang, dang, dang. Excellent work. Keep us up to date on when you're able to take firearms in.
