Talk me out of a Swiss Schmidt Rubin M1911

Post by ving-thorr »

As fellow levergunners, you guys have my back, right? Talk me out of a Schmidt Rubin M1911 or 1911 carbine, i mean, they don't even have levers!

I almost agree. I've had some 1911's throughout my lifetime that I don't want back, but most I love. I'm not familiar with the brand name.

I've heard all those old swiss rifles are in fine shape, since they never went to war, and since they're, well, swiss.

What got me thinking was i was telling my wife how in switzerland everyone has a rifle, that the government GAVE them. She thought that we should do that here. I told her how some swiss guys have safes of service rifles, "here's mine, here's dad's, here's grandpas, etc" and mentioned that some guys must not want to keep them because there's lots for sale here. She said "oh, how much are they?". I said "under $300", she says "oh you should get one".

Dies are cheap, buffalo arms has brass, hmmmm ...

Coming here and asking us to talk you out of a firearm purchase is a bit like going into a bar and asking the bartender to talk you out of a drink. And yet I still do it...

I've never had the 1911 but I have a K31. I see no reason to NOT get one. Once you fiddle with that well machined straight pull, I suspect you'll think the same thing. Just for clarification, are you looking at a full length M1911 or the K11 carbine?

Swiss GP11 is close to match grade but Berdan primed. You can get a special decapping pin for your dies and I believe a couple of places are importing Wolf Berdan primers now. OR you can just use the Prvi Partizan loads. IIRC either Hornady or Wolf also load 7.5x55 now as well. All of those options will be Boxer primed.

The K31 is much better than the 1911, you should not shoot full pressure 7.5 X 55 through it.

Did I mention that my k 31 has the best trigger of any military rifle I have.I'm betting the 1911 is just as good.........just saying.

Your wife said buy it and you are still coming here wanting us to talk you out of it. Not hardly... If she thinks you should buy it you better buy it if it never does anything but gather dust.

Clearly my idea of the Swiss 1911 wasn't the right idea. It's a rifle not pistol.

I've heard that about the 1889 and 1889/96 but I was under the impression the 1911 was designed specifically for what became GP11...

They say that the 1911 is a little weaker than the 1931 model. But there is no reason not to use the GP11 ammo as many swiss target shooters do.

As the very happy owner of a K31, I would never talk anyone out of buying such a nice example of Swiss engineering.

Just get it.
