Winchester 1892 32 WCF to 357 Mag conversion

Post by twobit »

I have a Winchester model 92, 32-20 that has been converted to .357 mag.
I understand that some modification has to be done to the carrier, which wasn`t done at time of conversion. What modification does this consist of and can it be done by a non gunsmith?

Thanks.

Does the gun feed properly? If it does don't worry about it. The purpose of the kicker in the lifter was to correct feeding issues.

Not only can the average person not do this modification, you are going to have a hard time finding a gunsmith that has any idea how to do it.

If it's feeding you may not need anything done to the carrier. If it won't feed the first thing to look at if the shell guide spacing. In order for the 32 guides to feed 357/38 the gap between the guides has to be opened up to allow the larger rim Dia. to come through. But, if they took too much the back end won't come up fast enough and the longer 357 rounds won't make the turn into the chamber.
But if they are set right the carrier can be mod-ed with some weld metal to help the rim come up a bit sooner. part of the problem is the original shell guides work well with bottlenecks like the 32WCF but the rim slot angle can be a little slow for straightwalls like 357m.
That's one of the things rossi has over the Chiappa and Miruko Wins. the geometry of their shell guides work better with the straightwalls.
The best fix is to use Rossi shell guides and carrier.
